Will a shark mess with a kayak?

It seems that this post has gone off topic and became about drinking. and yes I have even seen people arrested for driving a lawn mower while drinking. ( I was in law enforcement for over 10 years). To get back on topic I feel as long as you think safety first you will stay safe in the yak even with sharks around.

Depends on the situation.
You probably won't get messed with while just yakin a bait out.

The last kayak that was hit by a shark that I know of was a test nibble by a great white in California LOL.

My friend and I have both bumped sharks with the paddle while yakin back in from droppin the bait. JD Hammer was bumped by a bull shark, twice in the same night in shallow water.

Hell, I even heard of a tipper jumpin into/and out of a yak after another angler hooked it from the shore!

Whatever that thing was that hit Hammer lifted him and the kayak 3ft in the air... we're still not positive what that thing was. He has also ran over lemon sharks and had his baits taken out of the kayak by blacktips.

Just an average fisherman.

Blacktips took the bait from the yak?! Was it hanging half way off?

that is why we have a tub with a lid mounted in our yak that we can seal the bait in. dont want to leave a slick leading to the yak when taking bait out.

I would love a chum slick behind my kayak to where I dropped my bait. I experimented for a while with putting a chum block inside a burlap bag with sand for weight. I did catch some sharks, I also found that sometimes in the morning when I reeled my bait in that the sand bag was tore up and the bait was untouched other than crabs.

We need a bigger hammer!

I try to remind myself how fickle they are. You can drop a big and bloody bait out there and nothing will touch it for hours, sometimes not at all. We are a bit cavalier with the big bloody baits we place on the front of the kayak. I've not been bumped but have had black tips zip in front of me chasing bait. Had a Dolphin come up and check me out one night in calm water. I didn't like that.

I think that you are checked out more often than you might think. It is common to get bumped up by a Manatee if you paddle over them. They don't like that. Maybe that is what got JD.

Was she around that time??? http://www.ocearch.org/profile/katharine/
Never know ..:)).. kidding. There are way more chances on winning at lotto than getting into an encounter with a great white in FL waters.

I've only been shark fishing on the beach six times and only had to yak baits out twice (good thing about being a bigger guy lol).

Anyways it was my first trip going out flat calm thankfully but at night and a buddy says to be careful and don't worry about spooking tarpon. I looked at him like WTF you mean that's when I find out tarpon like to rest (sleep) ontop of the water. Anyways about 100 yards off the beach I hit something with my paddle and sure enough a tarpon starts jumping less then five feet from my yak was pretty cool.

Now second trip yaking out baits its flat calm durning the daytime now and off I go again al the sudden a dozen or so flying fish scatter coming towards me and one lands in my lap pretty damn cool. But here's where things get trippy I get to the reef and drop the mullet right infront and start to head back to shore and the line I just dropped got picked up not even a minute after being dropped. Turned out to be a 5 ft blacktip but still a little scary.

I have never had a shark mess with me while dropping baits but I have seen them in the day, saw a big nurse sitting on a sandbar one time and I have seen blacktips chasing ladyfish a couple of times. Closest encounter I had was at night when I was returning from a longish drop and the water about 10 feet in front of my yak exploded! Scared the Sh*t out of me for a couple of seconds until I saw 3 dolphins jumping in the general viscinity of the splash.

I was in Palm Beach a couple days ago and as I was paddling a bait out, I hit around 10ft feet of water and saw a good sized tiger swim right under my kayak. I dropped the bait there and hauled ass back to the sand. It didn't mess with my kayak but it sure is scary seeing it that close.
