Will a shark mess with a kayak?

It s the third time i see a shark while taking a biat out. This time it was af night. The shark surfaced 10 ft in front of me. It was a hammer about 5-7 from fin to fin.(the same day at the same spot a 12ft hammer was spoted eating a tarpon). It was swimming pretty fast. I dropped my bait as soon as i saw hime and slowly paddled back, i never looked down in the water to see if he was under me. Is there a chance that he bumps or bites the kayak? I m starting to get freaked out about taking baits out at night since i v been seing so many coming close to me.

I've never seen a shark while kayaking out baits so I don't really know the feeling you have probably got. I wouldn't really worry to much, the only time ive seen anything about a shark attacking a kayak was a great white attacking one. If I was you I would just be really cautious when yaking out baits from now on. Good luck and tight lines

Depends on the situation.
You probably won't get messed with while just yakin a bait out.

The last kayak that was hit by a shark that I know of was a test nibble by a great white in California LOL.

My friend and I have both bumped sharks with the paddle while yakin back in from droppin the bait. JD Hammer was bumped by a bull shark, twice in the same night in shallow water.

Hell, I even heard of a tipper jumpin into/and out of a yak after another angler hooked it from the shore!

Here fishy fishy fishy.....

I wouldn't worry about hammers..they aren't so aggressive towards things that don't look like food and seem pretty cautious. As long as you don't look like a tarpon you should be fine

I would only worry about larger bulls or big tigers, which are more territorial and aggressive, with higher amounts of testosterone. But still, if you don't look like food they will most likely leave you alone. You may get followed, or bumped because that is how these animals figure out what you are, and how they feel objects..then once they realize that you aren't food they tend to move on. That is why you hear stories of people getting bumped, then nothing happens. It is most likely a bull shark trying to decide if your yak is edible. I'm willing to bet nearly everyone here who has spent a decent amount of time running lines out has been right on top of a big shark checking them out without even knowing, so just be safe and don't let your nerves get the best of you.

It's part of the game, you want to get a nice fish on the beach you have to take yourself out of the comfort zone it's only fair

Like I said, I wouldn't worry about a hammer, I don't care what size it is. Bulls have a more aggressive, territorial attitude and have higher testosterone levels than any other critter on the planet so they may be a cause for concern. If you enjoy fishing, no, you shouldn't be worried about taking baits out at night. Who knows how many of these 9' bulls you've passed by already, had any problems yet?

In fact, I'd be more worried about taking baits out at night if there were not 9' bulls and 12' hammers under me..that would suggest to me I need to switch beaches and find out where they are.

It's always in the back of my head while kayaking at night- what potentially is checking me out too see if I'm edible or not and I wouldn't even know about it lol. But then I remind myself many people go surfing every day

Its not just at night. while having my friend yak the baits out during the day we have seen the sharks fining all around him. We keep our bait in a bait box in the yak till ready to drop so we not leaving a chum slick behind the yak while paddling the bait out. We also try to have all the lines in the water before dark just for safety reasons.

This post comes from a guy who swim back 500 yds in 4-6 ft seas pitch-dark around 11pm at night, with a flipped kayak in nasty winds couple years back... You're always safe in a kayak as long as you learn not to panic. Problem is, it takes practice to learn just that. Sharks are more scared from you than we, people, realize it. However, playing dump - has its price too. So, don't drink and drive nor don't drink and kayak - and you'll be just fine. And BTW - they are both DUI in your driving license, by FL law - in case u wonder.

Excellent point about keeping a cool head and not panicking Boghy ,BUT a DUI on a kayak????I don't know about that. :o :o Can you imagine.  A police officer approaches the yakker as he hits the sand 'excuse me sir someone in the condo behind us reported a kayaker padaling erratically and we have to administer a DUI sobriety test on you to confirm you were not not driving under the influence,,,,,"but Officer I was being chased by a large hammerhead shark that mistook me for a Tarpon" well son the new FWC law requires kayakers to not drink and paddle",,,,,,,does Kool Aid count??

I was as surprised as you are when i first find out, but the wording that they're using is "operating any vessel, water skis, sailboard or any similar device under influence" is considered BUI (Boating Under Influence) which applies as DUI in your driver license - funny part - the kayak is a vessel too where they don't specify motorized or not - that's in FL, other states they do. Obviously, not common, but technically by law - very applicable if playing dump with the law enforcement while intoxicated from a kayak. So your story as funny as may sound, it could turn into an unpleasant long-term consequential end - if enforced at full extend of the law. Again at the end of the day, is just what of thous things, where they have the law on they side, but its up to them whether they'll going to enforce it or not, which again - goes back to the level of stupidity displayed around law enforcement.
Moral of the post is - be responsible, practice self-control & self-rescue techniques while BTB, learn not to panic and you'll be just fine.

What if I am an elderly drunk man in a wheel chair, a cripple on meds operating my hover round, or a 4 year old on a tricycle who just had 6 cups of mountain dew? Will I need a lawyer?

Just kidding..this sort of crap doesn't surprise me at all, not one bit. These commies write these laws so they can screw the common man in multiple ways while covering their own asses. Their little system is designed solely to enrich lawyers and to generate revenue, nothing more. I wasted 3 perfectly good years years of my life studying their 'laws' in a liberal indoctrination camp known as 'university' where they unsuccessfully attempted to brainwash and neuter me into going along with their communist manifesto..I'd gladly shoot myself rather than work for their system any day

You just wait and see how much more intrusive laws become..there are some right now that would blow your mind.
