1st time being overpowered
I remember it was kind of slow that day considering the time of year, and not much in the surf was biting so my brother and I had a tough time getting a nice big bait. It was the end of May and I wanted to top off the month with a really big shark, even though I didn't really have the gear for the job. We were fishing with smaller baits throughout the day it was all we could catch since morning. None had been hit all day so I figured I may as well run out a big frozen one. I usually bring a garbage bag of frozen bait to keep my fresh caught bait cool and out of the sun throughout the day but today I actually was going to use a frozen bait even though I usually think it is a waste of my time. I got my tld 25 and 7' 30-60# star rod and ran a big circle hook through the snout of a whole 2 and a half ft blacktip I caught the day before and had already fished it without a hit. I was glad I decided to save it for an emergency situation. The surf had gotten rougher throughout the day, and as I was taking the bait out water started to spill over the side of the canoe, and it was tough paddling against the wind waves and current so I dropped it short, about 130-150 yds out and luckily I made it back to shore without sinking. The bait sat there for several hours, I wasn't comfortable with where I had it placed I would have liked it out a little bit deeper, plus it was frozen. It was already getting well into the time of day where we start getting runs like crazy but today it was quiet as I was commenting to my brother what a nice sunset it was that day. Then I heard the tld 25 clicker screaming like crazy, with my rod tip pointed directly at the horizon. I thought the click gear was going to be grinded down to nothing the way the bait took off. I jumped up in the air and yelled "go baby go" as I made it over to the rod holder.."eat it, eat it you big ^*($(#(" I shouted, as I had to put a little more drag on the spool to slow it down the fish was taking off so fast I almost got backlashed. I let the fish roll off more line and asked my brother "think he ate it yet" looking for his approval, he nodded yup..so I put the lever drag into strike, paced back a few steps and the fish took off even faster. It looked by the way line was flying off the reel and through the guides that I had it in freespool. I was excited, I knew it was a big hammer, nothing else would be able to go this fast. I put the reel in full drag and this had no effect at all. I remember one time I had a dolphin accidentally eat a cut piece of catfish I had casted out about 100 ft from shore back in summer 2009..whatever I had on the end of my line was going about as fast as that dolphin did but with much greater authority..I could feel the power of this fish it was amazing. I told my brother to reel in the other bait we had out, we're going to be tying in. I was down to about 400 yds of line on the spool with an angry monster a little bit over 400 yds away and still going incredibly fast. The tld 25 was spooled with over 800 yds of 80# braid nowhere near enough to stop this beast and nowhere near enough drag. At this point I was just trying to enjoy it while it lasted, maybe tie in and stay hooked up to it a little longer. I did what I could to apply a little more drag, I thumbed the bottom right hand side of the spool in an attempt to slow him. Still going. I was just trying to enjoy this while it lasted I even thought of getting into the canoe and going after it but it was pretty rough out that day, not a good idea. Then suddenly, POP..the shit braid broke off right at my rod tip. The beast moved on trailing several hundred yards of "superline" HAHA..the stuff is mostly garbage, braid is only good for setting the hook and getting capacity otherwise it is overpriced garbage. The only reasoning I have for this is that the line was flying through the guides so fast it got very hot rubbing against the tip and that is how I was popped off. I checked my guides when I got home that night and they were flawless not a single nick anywhere. That line had never seen the light of day before it was far down on the spool and in good shape, I don't know what else could have happened the heat must have got to it since it was flying off my reel so quick. Also, when I got home I took the tld 25 apart..noticed the drag washer looked like a piece of burnt toast and the drag plate was scratched up. That was the day I learned..when you hook one of these big sharks for the first time then you realize. I think I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity, haha. Like Will said before, don't bring a knife to a gunfight ![]()
Great Story....You title is "1st time being overpowered". Did you have a second time?
Do you recall what the braid looked like when it broke? Is it possible that you had some slack in the line for the "free spooling/birds nest" and it wrapped around the tip of the rod? Maybe the burnt toast drag washers started to get sticky and lockup which broke the line?

The line was broken pretty clean if I remember right. The line was going through the guides just fine but exceptionally faster than normal..there was only danger of a birds nest when the reel was in clicker mode before I set the hook so all that line was long gone. The drag didin't lock up or anything but I noticed it was sticky and jerky since the washer and plate were mangled. Since I was far down on the spool and putting so much drag on the fish and the drag wasn't working right that could have broke me off from too much pressure?
There was another time a couple weeks later I was taken down to within a few yards of the knot, my brother was already fighting another shark on the other rod so I pressed my thumb on the side of the spool to stop it and at least get my $100 of line back. Luckily the line popped fairly close to the double line this time. It was a slower run but very steady and just as powerful. The fish my brother landed soon after was a smaller 5 and a half ft bull I think mine might have been a much bigger bull.
