I was thinking about staying at the islander hotel in Islamorada and rowing baits out from their dock/pier thing but unsure of commiting to the plan as of yet. I do love the 7 mile though :D

This reply is a little late. I have spent many days/nights on the Islander Pier over the past 15 years. It is Bonnet head country there. The water is very shallow, even a couple hundred yards out. The crabs are also insane out there. I have seen manatees, tarpon, and nurse sharks at night. Never saw a large shark come through. I assume the hammers may come close with the right tides and bloody baits.

I went to the "key lantern" hotel Islamorada. Very moderately priced and pretty nice. Channel #2 bridge is pretty close to there. I fished it but just went out with a 14/0 and a trinadad 50. Used a mudray and a black drum head about 15lbs, didnt get any hits but was only there 3 hours. Looks fishy as hell though, guys beside me caught a few nice yellowtail and mango's.
