I seriously doubt EVERYONE takes bait out at night..some people don't take baits out much at all. You can catch plenty of nice fish within the last few hours of sunlight as the weather cools down and if the tide is right it will be some of the best fishing you could have..well before darkness. I was going to give it a shot today but didn't quite make it to the spot again if you know what I mean

Also..some of our beaches have pretty deep water in between the shore and the sandbar..some beaches have a really close sandbar you can cast over and get into fairly deep water..so don't think that you need to kayak bait out to get a nice fish. You can do it from the beach without getting wet. You can also wade out to the bar and cast..that will get you into some good fish. Also, you could cast into the channel of a pass from shore and reach the sharks.

Seriously
A lot of guys Kayak bait out at night, including me (still new to the sport.) Full discloser though- I fish calm S. Florida Gulf waters. Not sure how readily I'd Kayak in the rough Atlantic surf at night. I guess it would depend how rough/dangerous it was at the time. I'm not overly freaked out about getting bitten by a shark. My biggest fear is the close (to the shore) boat traffic the South West region gets. Getting hit by a boat while Kayaking in the dark - that concerns me a little. (Even with a head lamp on.)

Haha dang John, we gotta get out there soon if you can make it! I've only yaked my bait out once at night about 50 yards and I don't feel very comfortable in an 8 foot s.o.t yak. I might just stick to taking the baits out at sunset for a bit longer ha.

I can't cast my 14/0 everol so I yak at night. I watched the founder of the forum yak out in pretty rough stuff in a little 8ft dingy of a yak (not sure it really is 8ft) so most do yak at night. Oh and IslandboyAlec yakked out in HORRIBLE stuff at boca earlier this year as well.

You mention just a handful of people, does not automatically mean that most do yak at night. Plenty of people newer to the sport might not be as comfortable with the idea of it just yet such as the OP stated.

I have fished with around 20 members on here and everyone of them yaks at night. And I only mentioned those few to illustrate that even in rough surf it can be done. On a side note, always be safe out there and wear a life vest, use a headlamp/bring a knife and make sure the bait is behind you in case a boat grabs your line from behind you. That way you dont get hooked, I have had a few people get dumped in my crew and because of these actions everyone was okay. Oh and tie off the paddle to the yak.......

my favorite part of fishing from the beach is the kayaking. i like the tranquility of being far off the beach in pitch black, swiftly rowing, when every paddle stroke is illuminated, i always thought of it as kayaking in space. no better feeling in the world imo. the best part i surfing back in :D

I don't really mind yaking out at night. I won't do it if it is really rough and I don't like it when it is dead calm. A little chop is preferable. There is something about being out there disturbing the water when it is like glass that makes you feel vulnerable. I was out last month and a dolphin came by to check me out. Scared the living daylights out of me. A slight chop makes me feel less out in the open.

Regardless you gotta do what you gotta do. I've never been very lucky in the day.

When I first started out I never thought that I would yak out baits a night...that all changed two summers ago. After the first trip out it became much easier

I like the quiet, alone feeling out there a few hundreds out at night. Like its the only thing that matters at the time. The dead silence and stillness reminds me of Iraq (Syrian border) latenight on a L.P.O.P watching the border doing what I do. The desert at night makes me think about the gulf on a calm night sitting on Redington Pier as a pier rat. I think I just like the stillness... No where else in the world have I seen that stillness...
