My first encounter with a giant.

It was a really nice day, warm, sunny, flat seas. I get to the beach with my friends around 6pm and get ready to take some baits out. I take my 50w at first, about 300 yards drop. Then i decide to take my 80 further, about 600 yards out. When i get out there i see a bunch of bait pods and something (probably mackerel) is making them freak out. I stay there for a couple minutes to see if anything jumps out of the water. When i start paddling in after dropping my bait i decide to splash the water and hit my kayak with my paddle to make some noise so a shark would come to that spot and hopefully take my bait. So i start paddling in, and it s not long before i look down and see a massive shadow just cruising under the yak. My first thought was that since sun was setting it was just the reflection of the sun in the sea, so i keep going and hoping it s only the sun until all of the sudden i see an actual brown shape and a humongous tail, at this time i had a million thoughts going through my head, do i yell at my friends, do i paddle faster, slower, do i stop... I was freaking out!!! I decided to just paddle nice and easy and hope that the beast would let me go back to shore safely. the shark followed me for 100-200 yards and when i got close to the sand bar, it just disappeared. I still do not know what kind of shark it was since i did not get the see the head. I have never seen a shark over 9ft, so i do not want to take a guess on the weight, but i am really confident that this shark was well over 12ft. Scary but magical experience. As these guys that caught that 700lbs hammerhead 2 weeks ago quoted, it was " a dream of a nightmare“.

I remember the first time I yaked a bait and I was about 50 yards out and there were mullet jumping everywhere and then a big blacktip jumped like 15 feet from my kayak and scared the crap out of me.

There's been nights paddling in the boca pass where I've seen some tall fins cruising damn close to my yak. Only reason you know they're there is cus of the moon :P infact fairly certain it was Dan and his cousin who were out there one night in a tandem yak and got flipped by a big hammer (were leadering a tarpon I believe)

I have been doing shorter drops. It isn't so bad when you are heading out with the leader in your teeth, trying to figure out where you want to drop the bait. It's right at that point where you turn around and look at the lights of the condos and see how far out you are. Everything is quiet. I resist the urge to haul arse and do a panic paddle in. Its that moment when the paddle is on your lap and things are way too still. Then you see a big shape ....

I was thinking maybe it was a big bull, tiger bumping me at that point would do me in. I am sure that they can sense the blood on the kayak. The way JD stands in the water by the sharks head leads me to believe that this stuff wouldn't bother him.

It's at this point when I try to think of all the times that you get skunked and how fickle these animals can be.

Is it possible that this shark has been hanging around this spot for a couple days, may be a week or two? Because we use to get a lot of bites, sharks between 5-7ft and it s been a couple weeks since we have beached one. Althought, i think it was last week my friend and i were fishing there at night in bad weather both using a whole stingray as bait and his got pick up but the shark bit thru his mono leader (i guess it got tangled up) and 5 minutes later mine got hit and for some reason my wire twisted and broke. But both fish seemed to be pretty big since they swalloed both rays.

Last week I yaked out bait 15 minutes after releasing a 9ft hammer. As I was paddling out I saw a brown tip of a dorsal fin in front of me go left slowly then back to the right slowly. There were some bait fish jumping around but I didn't think much of it. After dropping the bait and turning around I paddled several times and looked down to my right with my headlamp on and BAM there was a hammer! It swam up towards me and turned back downwards underneath the yak. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to explode ha. My mind was racing also and I just tried to remain calm and paddle back slowly and steady. Not sure if it was the same one we had just released or what, but it was big. I always paddle out with my headlamp on but i've been trying to decide if I should just keep it off ha. I cant imagine getting tipped over out there!

guys...Shark are in fact HUGE PUSSIES!!!!! We are the apex predators not them and besides a little love bump the wont mess with you....well at least untill you meet Betsy, the 4200lb White that loves yellow topwaters. Luckily that is more something you East coast guys have to worry about a little more than me

None of this chatter would stop me, it's just fun to talk about. It is the part though, that all my Canadian friends don't get. "You mean you kayak out there where the sharks are at?" etc. etc. I tend to think about it more while up here. But once I'm back in Florida the crazy Canuck in me comes out and it rarely bothers me.

Anyone know if there is a standard distance that the boat markers are put out at? I think that I am pretty good at judging distance but it woul dbe helpful in knowing just how far out we are going with drops. I try to imagine football fields. One of these days I am gonna mark my line so that we can tell for sure.

I don't know if there is a standard distance it seems to slightly vary by beach..but if I had to guess it's usually about 150 yards give or take to the buoys on most of the beaches I've seen down here.
