just bought a 14/0
thanks! no its one of the older ones, i got it used, i only have about 30 yards of mono on it just to play with it maybe thats why its so hard to pull out the clicker.. is yours like that too?? im used to the 9/0 the free spool clicker comes off way easier.. im thinking maybe its so hard cuz i have almost no line on it??
Take it apart and clean it up before you fish it. Look for Wills post of his blowing up because he didnt do the right maintenance before fishing it.
Technically speaking the "blow out" happens anyway when the reel reaches the average 60lb drag. Even though the reel is set at 30-32lb at full spool, when the line is less on the spool, the drag can reach over 60lb drag, uncontrollably - where reels in that class tent to skip the connection between the spool's shaft an pinon gear. Something like that cannot be prevented through service, unless someone changes the pinon gear with one made from titanium. That's the main catch of level drags, these type of reels do not carry this type of problems, although many have side load issues under higher drag, but even so, none of these reel will "blow out".
boghy is right.. he always is. He's full of information and really helpful at only a click away.
I would still tear that thing down. Clean it... Soak it in simple green take a clean tooth bush to it get all of the grease off. Re grease that reel from bottom to top.
Take the drag stack out lightly grease them and wipe off excess.
You want to grease everything. then insides of the side plates the screws/crossbars.anywhere that can have a layer of grease put it.. you will not hurt anything..
Money is tight for me I use walmart's brand of wheel berring grease I think melting point is close to 500 degrees. I have not had one issue with it thus far... All of my reels are done with it.
Good luck. with the reel. I would load it with 200 lb dacron or braid which ever you could afford.600 yards of braid and top it with 200 lb mono you will have a beast of a winch

I understand what you are saying but this is the only 14/0 or 16/0 I have seen spooled that had the "blow out". And this is also the only one I have seen spooled that didnt have proper maintenance. I have seen more than a handful completely spooled.....
For instance if the pinion gear is already in bad shape it would be seen during maintenance.

Your point is VERY right as well !!! Although i don't want to get to technical, but overall ANY reel is good to be taken a part for personal inspection - no matter if its new or old. By that, when questions rise while inspecting the reel, someone else around here may have already the right answer just a question away. At first is a learning curve, but yet - its an overall progress. No wonder why we'are called a shark fishing community - we can truly help each other.
P.S. I tested a brand new 12/0, with HT-100 drags, Cal's greased, and at full spool the reel managed to take 50lb drag, BUT as soon as reached the 55-60lb drag, you could hear a big "click" - at which point the reel's spool shaft start failing to catch properly into the brand new stainless steel pinon gear, as a result - its just a somewhat degree of prevention, not a full proof by servicing the reel. Plus brass (which is found in old penn's like the one we talk about) is weaker then stainless steel despite beach fairy tales stories presented to be the other way around.
