breakaway problems

When fishing a breakaway rock on my bigger reels it seems the sharks r not committing to the bait getting plenty of runs but they drop it alot I'm considering going back to my coat hanger spider weights but I hate them feeling weight when they pick the bait up any ideas?

I always use a sliding trace on my leader!! About 25 feet that way if they pick it up and drop I still have my weight it's worked well for me for a long time!!!

i do the same on my shock leader i run a slider and jus tie my break away to it that way the fish has a gd amount to run before feeling that weight and by then he is already eating also the momentum from the slide helps break the weight off easier i think

i've been using 12lb mono for my breakaways. no problems. your baits might be too big as well. sure a big bull, tiger or hammer will inhale a large 10lb bait but those 6ft black tips and sand bars can't. they'll probably miss the hook and drop the bait just due to the pull of your pre set drag on strike (set for the bite, not set for strike on a lever drag).

the spider weights really are the best way to go. mouse trap style.

you do realise on a drop over 150 yards, with your line set tight and about 5lbs of drag on the reel to keep the waves from taking line, the shark has more pressure to deal with from that then the rock keeping the bait down. they do feel it. even with smaller reels and set in freespool with the clicker. there is plenty of resistance.

i never set in free spool ive had sharks hit so hard that they ave backlashed the reel. so i put the reel in gear and back the drag way down never have a problem and seems to do the trick time after time

i have multiple tension knobs on my reel so it wont backlash on the hit when in freespool

lol. thats why i said smaller reels. the 12/0 doesn't have a tension knob? i know the 9/0 does but its worthless. i have seen 9/0's modded with a left side tension knob and they were able to set it tight enough for trolling and keep the drag preset at what ever they desired.

here's my abu 9000 with the knobs. makes worlds of difference for casting and keeping the line tight in freespool.
