Problems with large J hooks

This post was not made to start the debate on whether or not J's or cirlcle hooks are more effective for hooking and landing a shark or which one is better for the shark. The question I have is a few years ago when I was fishing with large mustad 12/0 J hooks, the hooks would dig down into the sand when I would reel them in. This would make reeling the rig in almost impossible and at times there was no way that I could reel even with the drag fully locked down. I have been using large owner circle hooks with some sucess but wanted to use some large J's on some of my large shark rigs. I don't want to encounter the same problem I did several years ago though. Has anyone experienced this before, and if so how did you deal with it?

believe that the hook catches a rock when that happens usually when it happens i just kayak out there and pull on the opposite side it usually comes up

I have thought about doing that...just don't want to have to yak out 400-500 yards almost every time. I was becoming a pretty regular occurrence with the j's.

Pure sandy bottom won't stop your hooks... there must be some obstruction where you fish. You should try inventing some weedless shark hooks, I'll buy two.

Just an average fisherman.

:o "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! :D  I'll let you know... Already have a few ideas.
My 16/0 mustads used to drag all the way in, I now use 12/0-14/0 VMC Tuna/Marlin hooks. The point of the hook curves inward quite a bit and reduces the dragging and hangups for me. Also, it may have something to do with how you hook your baits and how they track in the water when retrieved.

These are the ones I like to use in 12/0 or 14/0 depending on my bait on hand. http://www.thehookupcapecod.com/prod-VM ... s-445.aspx
