Some of SFSC biggest of 2012
Are places where we seldom fished in the past holding more sharks because of warmer waters during winter months or is that we have tapped into a previously unfound fishery?
The amount of spots that we fish now, compared to the spots we fished in the past has greatly increased .Today we fish a variety of spots both day and night that in previous years we had not ventured to.How we fish, when we fish and more importantly WHERE we fish has changed also.We fished mostly at night decades ago but now we see good anglers catching big sharks during daylight hours more and more frequently. The older SFSC members mostly fished the South Beach pier in the late 1960's,70's and 80's and then migrated to the bridges, other piers and the beaches when the old concrete pier on 1st street was condemned and demolished in 1984.Land-based shark fishing like all other types of fishing is always in a state of evolution and techniques improving so that today's shark fishermen are better informed and able to make greater catches in new and old spots thanks to the fast exchange of valuble information and knowledge gained on the internet. Inlets close to bays have always produced a good variety of big sharks but seldom have we seen one area producing so many large sharks during the height of winter. We have evolved and most definitely gotten better,,,,Rene de Dios would be proud of us.
1)The internet and fast, free exchange of information has improved how we fish
2)The lightweight kayak has improved how we fish
3)The advances in tackle has improved what we can catch

She burned 400 yards then slowed down a little, I figured it was a big bull shark considering the area so I put my hands on the spool to put additional drag and stopped him, it turned and swam in fast and I gained a lot of line but it dumped me back out to the same spot. I needed Dan's assistance strapping in to a waist harness for support. I couldn't gain line power winching so I got up, held the spool, and walked way up the beach and ran back gaining line and did this 2 or 3 times. The shark was getting too close to a curve on the beach so we went back towards it and got the line in a better position and from there it was 100 yards away, I still thought it was a bull shark but then it surfaced and all I saw was a yellowish color so I thought it was a lemon... it surfaced once more and I thought it was a bull. It wasn't until it was 50 yards in the giant sickle fin verified what it was. When it got close I dropped my rod and rushed towards the swivel figuring it was my first hammer I didn't want to lose it.OMG what a fish! We had it beached within an hour of hooking it. The fish weighed too much her girth was huge. Just the 2 of us wasn't enough to get it out of the water. We snapped some pictures with our dying camera, measured it at 170 inches and spent the next hour walking back and forth with HER reviving her did about 10 laps along the beach, we ran into 3 or 4 rays in the process and it came close to biting me when it swung around a few times. But it swam off slow and steady and I was satisfied with the release.

Went fishing with Austin and JD and landed a bull shark with their help. The shark would have been tough to land without flawless teamwork by those two guys. Jd is going to get Mark to put the pics up when he gets some free time. THIS SHARK ISNT A BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANOTHER HAMMER, EIGHT FOOT CAUGHT THIS WEEK. THREE IN THE AFTHENOON.
PICS SOON.
I don't think the temperatures helped the fishing at all... it's been tough to get bites when there should have been (or maybe the seasons are "normaling" out again) cause last year the bite was on all year for some fish.
Just an average fisherman.
i just made that pic black and white really quick. ill try to make it better when i get a free min

Believe me if you had the typical cold fronts that blow through in January and February the shark fishing would of been alot slower and yes the warm weather slows other fish that migrate with the fronts but ya gotta take the bad with the good.

Very nice write up.
I love the Blk and white.
I think this has been a very warm winter, I believe it is a sign of some good sharkin this year.

It's just my opinion that the smaller fish (bait) has absolutely everything to do with the amount of sharks... but we will see in due time.
Just an average fisherman.
