last night was the night...i have been shark fishing behind my house on singer island since january and have only been able to catch blacktips and spinners. at first these catchs were among my largest fish ever caught and i was excited everytime that drag started screaming. catching them on spinning gear is an incredible fight. then i stumble upon sfsc.com and i realize what i am missing out on. since finding this incredible site and sharking community i have been hooked on getting bigger gear, bigger rigs, bigger baits...BIGGER SHARKS! i set my homepage to sfsc.com and everytime i turn the computer on i cant wait to read about what people are catching and all the informative topics that are discussed. although i have never met anyone on this site i read posts and feel apart of this sharking community.
heres the report:
two nights ago i broke my fighting belt and was pissed about it. the surf finally calmed down yesterday and i wanted to fish and knowing i would be fishing without a belt would have sucked if i got that big boy on the line. my girlfriend without me knowing comes home yesterday with a new belt and she stopped by a drift boat and picked up two monster blue runners for bait (largest blue runner i have ever seen) i was fired up after seeing her come in with the belt and bait i couldnt wait to get the bait out. it was still early in the day and i couldnt stop paceing around the house. at 8 o clock i rigged up a whole runner on the 50w and i put the head and stomach section on my 9/0. paddled the 50w out two hundred yards and the 9/0 about 150. my girlfriend and i set up camp getting everything ready for when the rod takes off. i usually fish solo and fish one rod so i dont have to worry about both taking off together or getting tangled while fighting. tonight we put out the both because i had a good feeling. the baits were soaking about 3 hours then all of a sudden the 9/0 starts slowing rollin out. i jump up grab the rod put her in free spool and let em eat. i let him eat for about 30-50 feet then tighten that star up and runnin man it down the beach my girl was right behind me and i almost ran her over but i sank that hook and fight was on. he started screaming line and as the spool starts getting below 1/4 i try and put some pressure on the spool. burnt the hell out of my thumb def need to get some gloves. i turned him back south and got him close to the beach i saw the dorsal and knew it was a hammer i was freaking out. night after night hammer dreamin i finally got one on the line and in the surf as soon as i scream hammer he must have felt the sand on his belly and took off again. took me back down to 1/4 spool. the fight lasted almost an hour but i finally got him to the surf again passed the rod to the girlfriend and ran to get that tail rope on. missed the first attempt but second time i cinched that rope down and i knew i had him. dragged him into the shallows making sure i had enough water passing through his gills got a few pics and a measurement got the hooks and sent him back out to get into the 15foot catagory to be caught another day.
shark fishing has become such an addiction and im so happy there are others out there like me...im starting to get my girlfriend into it as well...she wakes up this morning and says...can we go catch another one tonight!! so next year i will def be entering a team in the BHC.
