The Old Man and the Sea -Inspiration, Strength for fisherman
Ernest Hemingway wrote what is in my humble opinion the single best fishing story of all time. Here are some excerp's from the Prize winning book about an old fisherman. An old man with a linen handline fights the fish of his life ;a giant marlin from a wooden skiff. The old man is beyond exhaustion but pushes himself and remembers his youth to find the strength to overcome.

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA- Ernest Hemingway
"He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely... He cannot know that it is only one man against him, nor that it is an old man. But what a great fish he is"

I am a special education teacher. Whenever I teach English, I require that the students read The Old Man and the Sea. My Hispanic students seem to have a special appreciation for the novel since it takes place in Cuba. The first time that one of my classes read it, they asked me to read aloud the section near the end when Santiago (the old man) finally made it back to the beach and Manolo (his young friend) saw how battered and worn out he was. Much to my embarrassment, I began to weep while I was reading it. My students were stunned to see what an impact an author could make on a reader. It was then that they seemed to realize that books are more than words. They can elicit raw emotions because the reader can really feel like they are experiencing what an author is eloquently describing. If you love fishing and have never read it before, it should be on your 'must read' list. ![]()
