CJ that proves my exact point!

Yes I no. But similar species such as Thailand giant freshwater stingrays have been weighed accurately such as the 412 lbs stingray with a 6 foot wingspan that Jeremy wade caught. The Thailand giant freshwater stingray is dimentionally exactly the same as a southern.

That would be like saying that 2 separate 6ft bullsharks would weigh the exact same amount......big ray no doubt, I am done on this topic.

There are some big rays out their.

Dont want to say impossible but a ray 8 feet 600lbs on spinning gear and 50lb line from the beach is a little crazy :?

only reason I say this is because I had a 3-400lb roughtail ray pull 60lbs of drag off my 80W and have been dumped by rays with bigger spinning reels.

Im sorry but a 300lb ray would have dumped that setup before you could even think about what to do.

Plus the world record southern stingray is under 250 lbs

The biggest stingrays in the Atlantic are roughtails and the world record is 400lbs.

Sorry for being a donkey...

WOW you got me thinking now CJ, it took 3 of us to lift him out{ 5feet across}
& there wasn't one of us under 6" & 225 & this was when I was running a crane truck { Boom} & "humping "60,000lbs of drywall DAILY,
I was in shape then boy, I could take a 108lb pack of fiberglass shingles on each hand & walk the peak of a roof
I could pull back pretty hard on anything pulling on me from the Sea! LOL
Wonder just what the heck he did weigh?

I understand that, sounds like a rough tail to me, the one I caught in FL did the whole snorting thing. It was about 6.5 7 foot wide but the thing was massive fat, the tail was like a baseball bait thick at the end of it. I had a 1000lb cable inside of hollow core ski rope that I use for a tail rope wrapped around the thing and 3 of us could barley even slide the thing let alone lift it. I was in shock at the mass of this thing. I wish I had better pics of it but there was a bunch of people harassing me and calling the cops... they all thought it was a manta and I was killing it  I managed this picture but it sucks because it doesnet show how MASSIVE this thing was. the mass a roughtail ray has over southerns or butterflys rays is crazy

heres a butterfly I caught that was 6 foot wide and it might have went 100-125lb

heres a big Southern 100lber

Butterfly on spinning gear that took about 1.5 hr to land

I think you are 100% right Brother! His tail was "rough" & it was about like a pool cue upclose to his body & stayed thick all the way
He was a helluva ray that's for sure & those "snorts" were loud, really
all those rays in the pics are sure nice must have put some good fights up!!
