I am the guy on the left in the picture and the gaffman for this hammer. It was caught by Fred Wright (on right) on May 29th 1976 @ 6 miles offshore at Port Aransas TX. It is 13' 7" and weighed 865lbs. and yes it was pregnant. It was caught on a jack crevalle tail section 12/0 penn reel fishing out of a 20' Mako boat. We hooked it at 11:00 am and she was tied to the side of the boat at about 5:00pm , the wooden handle on the 80lb rod that he was using snapped off about ten minutes before I gaffed and head roped her.She went under the boat and he couldnt get the rod out of the chair gimbal fast enough and the handle went snap. The last ten minutes or so he sat on the front part of the rod and just reeled what could and luckily enough we were able to gaff her.
