Durban (S Africa) Shark Anglers Club up to 1158 lb G. Whites
South Africa has a long history of land-based shark fishing and we will post some stories and pictures to showcase some of that history.

Durban Shark Anglers Club Les Pearce with a 1158 lb great white shark caught on Durban's South Pier.circa 1954

Richard Jacobs demonstrates the sitting position and type of wooden fishing reel used in the 1950's and 1960's to subdue huge sharks from the Durban South Pier. These reels have no braking system instead pressure was applied from a piece of leather held in the palm.

Les Pearce fights a shark from the South Pier.Notice there is no rail on this pier and harnesses and belts were not typically used.

Les Pearce with a 1104 lb (blue pointer)white shark, the biggest caught by a Durban Shark Angling Club member in 1964.

One of the best days ever for the guys of the Durban Shark Angling Club May 14,1960 the guys landed 19 bull sharks(gray sharks) totaling 6340 lbs between 10 am and 3 pm.

1957 Cecil Jacobs with a 886 lb great white he caught on the Durban South Pier

Cecil Jacobs a charter member of the renowned Durban Shark Anglers Club was the first to land a 1000 lb shark in South Africa.Jacobs used 81 lb test line to whip the great white shark. A Fascinating catch if you take into account that the reel used has no braking mechanism and resembles a fly reel used to fish on the flats.More history to come.
wow that's amazing that they were able to subdue such monstrous sharks with reels like that
