Theyre thick in the back water by the spillways. Go on lowtide net some mullet when they get balled up and live line one. Last I was out for mullet I saw a tarpon every few minutes

go to the north skyway and net u some live ballyhoo. rig up with spinning tackle (i use my stella 10000 with 50lb braid) with atleast 50 braid with a line to line knot to 80 seaguar flouro. use an owner hook to match the ballyhoo, ie a 3-6, hook through the upper jaw and freeline straight down. make sure ur reel can exert some drag pressure and ur rod is pretty stout. crabs, mullet, ladyfish work but at skyway ballyhoo is best.

Assuming you're not looking for a small one...your best bet is the beaches...look for rollers at sunrise, if you don't see them, don't waste your time unless you know it's one of their "highways" for their migration..use cut ladyfish or catfish with 100lb leader..early is the name of the game..a lot of times by 9am the bite is over... if you're a night owl you can hit deep bridges with lots of current..no one is going to give up specific spots during tarpon season so get out there, put in time, and you will eventually find em.

We got a 230-240lb tarpon off of south lido beach in sarasota. Had half a pompano suspended 6 feet down the water column in the middle of the channel. The bait sat for about 10 minutes before getting hit. We were using a 9/0 spooled with 80 bullbuster and it was still like a 30 minute fight with us running half a mile down the beach to get ahead of it
