What kind of bait should i use?
Hey guys, i'm taking my first trip to Indian Rock Beach in a week or so, and i would like to know what kind of bait i should use. I know fresh is better then frozen, but i was thinking fresh mullet or ladyfish. What am i expecting to use around there? I am surf fishing, so should i bring a bait rod and use shrimp to catch whatever? Any tips to catch bait fish for shark from the shore? Going for medium size shark. Thanks
It depends on the reel, if you have a reel 12/0 and up use a big chunk of bait. If you have smaller Reels and can't really find any good bait such as Bonita stingray jack etc, just use mullet or whatever you can get your hands on. Check local marinas or where they have charter capt.s and ask for there fish carcasses.
Indian Rocks is a sweet shark beach. This time of year that area is swarming with sandbar sharks, and they are generally not terribly picky. I was down not too long ago and we were catching 4-5 sandbars between 7 and 10:00 at Indian Rocks, all mostly on whole fresh mullet, with stingray chunks as well. If you don't have a castnet I'd try to find someone selling fresh whole mullet and buy a couple, and if using casting gear cut each into 3 baits. Sling them out as far as you can and kick back. Shouldn't take too long. If you'd rather catch your own bait, hit up the intracoastal with live shrimp or bucktail jigs and try to get some ladyfish. The Park Boulevard Boat ramp is not far from you, and has a pier along the mangrove-lined ICW and should be an excellent spot to stock up on bait. When on the beach it never hurts to throw out a shrimp on a bait rod.

This Time Of Year You Could Use Anything
yeah, i heard fresh bait is the best. So i am hoping to catch my own.

Wow nice, were the mullet still alive or dead? and if i were to buy mullet, would i buy them dead or alive? and i plan to kayak the bait out. But i also might and try to catch some ladyfish because of how much they bleed.
Ive been fishing IRB since I was a small child (29 now), Rudy's right about the Sandbars not being picky, In a pinch I'll use live or dead catfish. Most baitshops carry frozen Mullet, Shad, and/or Bonito. Can get a bit pricey but as a last resort it works. The Intercoastal across the street from the beach is usually crawling with Catfish, Rays, Ladyfish and a bunch of grunts/pinners. A castnet will get you your Mullet. I prefer Rays and Bonito or a big Grouper head on IRB, but nearly anything will work in a pinch if the Sharks are home. The guys have been reporting catching a bunch of Bonito on the South Skyway lately.
P.S. if you get Bonito dont forget to pantyhose it, the pinfish and crabs will rape it in no time flat! Youll reel in a bonito skeleton at the end of the night or be changing baits like crazy. The Sharks don't mind the pantyhose any.
