I want to know how you feel about using a small to medium shark for bait.I don't have a problem with it because i know if the shark does not get eaten i will fillet it and put it on the grill.I believe in conservation but if want to eat shark i will kill a small one.

This is the thing Walter Maxwell who broke the World record Tiger shark 1780 lbs on Cherry Grove South Carolina (June 14,1964)did it using live lemon sharks for bait.He lost an even bigger Tiger shark also using live lemon shark for bait.I have read his story told in many different books and in all accounts he tells of using 3 to 6 ft live lemon sharks for the massive tiger sharks of South Carolina. It's a different world today people get squeamish about killing of sharks and it's understandable but huge sharks eat huge meals and that includes sharks.

We have had 5 to 6 foot blacktips eaten by huge hammerheads in the Florida keys bridges. We have on a few occasions put whole blacktips for bait but no takers yet.How do you feel about it?

I'll tell you what Will,i dont mind at all.If the shark dosent eat it i will grill it up for the family and not let it go to waste. This goes on in the ocean with out our help every day,so if i can catch that massive shark by way of a small bt or lemon's help why not. It's going to happen anyways.Circle of life.

i have mixed emotions about this topic....ive seen it done over the years as far back as the 70's with smaller blacktips in the surf.....our team has never done it but i hear a lotta teams down south do, bonnetheads live lined do the trick they say and get instant bites and even gettin there reels smoked on these baits......i just dont have the heart to do this, even tho they make great baits.....we use the other standard bait choices but its a personal prefrance....no tarpon or sharks for bait on our teams hooks.....we think its bad Kharma.. but they do get bites on these baits its a known fact..mike ;)

I've heard it's legal in Florida correct? I'm sure this happens in Texas but NOBODY talks about it....I guess if it's legal and nothing else is working....no sense in wondering what would've happened if you would've tried.

Id have to say that using tarpon at your own risk wouldnt even dampen the population or numbers of tarpon. they could long line them or net them off every coast and theyd still be everywere. the only thing that kills tarpon are big hammers and bulls who move fast enough.

a live tarpon for bait wont hurt fellas but hey i respect everyone on here and there opinions!!! catch them up fellas!!!

It's against the law so we can't promote or condone the use of tarpon for bait.We must obey the laws and respect the gamefish they are intended to protect.Tarpon are like cockroaches they are all over the place and extremely abundant but the law is the law.

If you were going to use a tarpon for bait and had a kill tag, would you have to put the tag on the fish you were using for bait? Thats what I'm assuming. I was thinking about getting one this spring as well.

Have you met my friend, Mr. Line Clipper? 8-)
Honestly though, has anyone ever had FWC ask them to reel in their line to inspect their bait?

norm. theonly time they will ask you is if someone calls you in for using tarpon or if there are scales on the ground. so im told but never out of the blue.
id be pretty mad if they did.
but just a tip for the what if game, if you happen to use your tarpon ""with you tag"" hook it lite not really deap like it were a cuda or ray just incase.
