Very good small bait ..........the Ladyfish
skip jacks are these small (10in at the biggest) really thin silver. pieces of crap.. kinda look like small jacks. but with poiseness type barbs on the back and belly... we consider them bad luck (cursed). lady fish is great bloody bait .. but hard to keep alive.. hammers love them live-lined ladies tho...
Actually their Oligoplites saurus or commonly know as leatherjackets or as we've always called em here on the panhandle "Crazyfish" because of their antics in the water. They have posionous barbs on dorsal and anal fins and desipte their small size it will hurt ya if ya catch one of those barbs. They have an odd diet of eating other live fishes scales when they are young.

Friggin HATE leatherjackets. I think my arm is still sore from the first...and ONLY...one I've ever grabbed. It gets kinda crazy when you're hauling ass in a jon boat and a big school of them comes out of the water all around you, and they fall all over the boat.
EVERY Ladyfish I ever put out caught either a Shark ,when they bait was whole, live, or a Ray , IF the shark left any of the lady fish ,or I lost the shark
I'm talking about BIG ladyfish , over 24" ,30" +
Biggest ray I ever caught was on half a2'+ ladyfish that a 4ftshark had hit [when it was alive, swimming]and gotten off ! LOL
If you can fish any canals , or know anyone that lives along a SaltWater canal , ask if they'll save you Rays orfish,
You'll catch Rays all the time like in Cape Coral
Canals there have lots of rays
