Im sure plenty of you know this already, but I figured Id share it anyway. Recently caught a ladyfish, if I recall correctly it was about 27-28 inches...Cut it in 4 sections, Hooked up on every peice within the first ten minutes. about a 5 foot Nurse hit the head, pair of blacktips hit the body peices, and a pretty nice Spinner hit the tail, but I lost it. Super bloody fish. Couldnt find any Rays that day, but the Ladyfish did the trick.

I've seen that term freelining around on the site, and have meaning to what that is. Is it just letting line go out until something hits?

We call them skip jacks around here. They are great bait if ya fishin for small sharks. I use a spinning rod with 25lb and have caught up to a 7' sand bar. Cut em in 3 pieces with a circle hook and 5' of 300lb mono and hang on. Blue fish is good to. I try to bait my 9/0 with blue fish ray or skipjack.

skip jacks are these small (10in at the biggest) really thin silver. pieces of crap.. kinda look like small jacks. but with poiseness type barbs on the back and belly... we consider them bad luck (cursed). lady fish is great bloody bait .. but hard to keep alive.. hammers love them live-lined ladies tho...

i think what willie was implying is to catch a ladyfish and quickly tailhook it and let it swim out on its own, I freeline bluerunners and small jacks from the piers, freeline ladyfish, moonfish, jacks, even grunts from certain bridges it all depends on what im tryign to catch... tarpon, snook, grouper, cuda, cobia, kingfish, bonita, shark, etc.

1st shark i hooked was on a live ladyfish, first shark i landed was on that same ladyfish after it got chewed to shreds...

Just an average fisherman.

a great bait for the castout when cut into pieces or for the 50SW left whole and alive just dont heavy cable and massive hooks, when using live bait like this less is more and hold on for dear life is right.
I saw a guy using one as king bait and got his Van Stahl loaded with heavy power pro wrecked by a some kind of shark, the bait swam out about 75 yds swimming on top the whole time and we watched a big dorsal come up and the explode on the ladyfish it was a pretty incredible strike. Once it ate it took off and didnt slow one little bit even with his drag on "lockdown" what was really funny is this guy was always bragging about his king gear and how much it cost and how he could go catch anything out there with it, let me tell you burnt up drag washers in a VS stink, :D the Man upstairs has a way of putting us back in our place.
