Stingray Question

When I'm in the surf, I avoid stingrays because I'm afraid they will stick me with their barb. Now I read that they are excellent bait, especially used live. I feel like I'm missing something here, how do you keep from getting hit by the barb? Sticking a hook in a live one seems like it may make it kinda mad!

We usually step on their tail and grab the barb with some needle nose and bend it back towards their head pulls right off. Or chop the whole tail off whatever you feel more comfortable with. Just watch your hands arent too slippery. I had mine slip down the pliers and got the barb right between my thumb and thumb nail not fun lol

I step on the end of the tail, let him whip a few times to make sure I have a good hold on it, then cut the tail off. It's easy to do, just be careful and use some common sense. If you are still worried, well, I mean, fish outta water, right? Let it calm down or die, then handle it.

Just slide the tip of a filet knife UNDER the barb BETWEEN the tail & Barb, and slice it off; alot of times there isn't any blood if you do it right just don't go deep ,then take the barb home, soak it overnite in bleach/water 50/50 , comes out looking like IVORY,

yep. I do this too.

i spear them with a Hawaiian sling and will cut it off in the water or when i get to the cooler. learn where the barb is and you'll never get stung by one.
