keeping bait fresh?

I know everyone has they're secrets, and i know fresh bait is by far the best thing you can use to get the monsters to take. But if you have no other choice or want to prepare for a slow day of bait fishing, what is the best was to prep bait for the freezer to keep it as fresh as possible. And how long is too long in the freezer with your method?

rays hold up fairly well just in trash bags in the freezer, but I have found that by freezing them covered in water in stackable tubs they come out looking like they were just caught the day before

My suggestion is to keep your bait in a freezer that is kept at 34 degrees if it is planned on being used soon to keep fresh but near frozen. If you dont intend on using it I would recommend getting containers to fit the size of your bait.

Take the bait and place it in the container.
Fill container with water.
Mix 1 and 1/2 of a cup of Menhaden oil in the water.
Agitate the water to ensure the oil is mixed up.
Place lid on the container and freeze.

This reduces the bait from getting freezer burn and allows the bait to soak up and added attractant for when it is fished.

I catch lots of plate sized rays that can be crammed into a big freezer ziploc bag so I just slide them into those...Also I tend to put bluefish and big mullet in them too and can fit 2-3 if you just chop the fork of the tail off. Keeps things a little neater than just tossing them all in a trash bag (But I do that a lot when I'm lazy too :? )
