eels for shark bait
I've read 3 posts on people using eels for bait, mainly in the keys, and i think all of them ended in big reels getting spooled! I would like to start a discussion on this.
1) how to catch eels?
2) where to catch eels?
3) the laws on catching/spearing eels?
4) who has ever used eels for bait?
i see them all the time when diving, but i dont know the rules on spearing or harvesting eels. i think that finding a bait that could possibly be a hidden treasure could definately help everyone in 2011 land bigger sharks. let me know what you guys think.
Put it this way- here in Australia if I was told that my life depended on me catching a big bull you couldn't pay me a million dollars to use anything other than a whole or cut freshwater eel!!! Now here's the tip- don't waste ur time using salt water eels, freshwater eels are the only way to go. (Could be different for florida though) Hands down #1 bullshark bait. Who I learnt how to shark fish from swore by them, and I was apart of a capture of a 278cm bullshark (9ft), caught on a whole freshwater eel. How to catch them is simple- a light fishing reel but with a solid trace 30pd. Single hook, use slabs of meaty fish or if u can get ur hands on it kangaroo meat- this stuff is perfect. Freshwater dams are good, we usually fish at golf course dams there's plenty of them there. To rig them up we usually cut their heads off (optional) cut the bait to size, then have one trace up the back half of the eel to one side and insert the hook so its lying horizontal, then the exact same on the other side but this time the front half. Zip tie the lose cable to the bait, and stab the bait a few times to get a nice scent happening. This is just how we do ours but everyone including us in Australia swears by them, especially for bullsharks. Hope this helps, good luck!
I know Lamperay(eel that sucks the guts and blood from salmon) are either the best or secondbest bait for Sturgeon here. Crabs wont eat it, most other fish wont eat it either. But it is EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one half eel about 10-12" is $50! And it stays on the hook well so 100yd casts with bait are possible.
Never caught a shark while fishing it though.
