when you have a real big bait on a bridge how do u drop it in the water to drift it out? lowering it in the water can rip the hooks out because of the size of the bait, and is nearly impossible to lower it slowly and throwing it off the bridge can make the balloon break off and risks the slack line catching your rod and pulling it into the water along with your bait . need help thanks

never had to ballon a big bait out. but when we drop them down to the kayak we will stick the gaff in it and drop it with the gaff and the kayaker pulls it out and off it goes.

assuming you have a tag i would try to get as close to the water is possible. even if that means walking to the shallows and walking it to the end if need be. if i remember right on 7mile there is a ledge at the end thats like right on the water if u can get down there and rig it and swim it. that would be my guess tho.

what me and Shawn used to do with massive rays would play the try to peg dan on the kayak with 60lb baits.

that may work. but also may get tangled.

i was thinking its not the best idea but may work. pull out enough line to hit the water and then a little extra. then torpedo the bait into the water and it should swim away. i would try it with a bait you dont have to pay 50 bucks for tho first.

Gaff it in the lip with a gaff with no barb, lower it slowly, when it hits the water give it slack and a jiggle, the gaff will be free. The idea of a live tarpon on a balloon in the keys is more trouble than it is worth. There are much easier methods to fish the keys and hook those big boys.

Just an average fisherman.

Ive been toying with the idea of using a rope ladder at the Skyway to unhook Goliath and Tarpon so theyre not released with leaders in them, ya know? Maybe you can apply that principle into your plan. :?:

A great way to lower big baits without worrying about the balloon popping off would be to leav a few extra inches of the line when you connect it to the swivel. By doing do tie a knot in the balloon and put the excess line through the hole of the balloon before you finish the knot with it. Tighten down the knot of the balloon and at this point it should look like a balloon tied on the the slack of the swivel. Now when you put it down ( carefully ) let the current take it and when it reaches where you want, you want to yank the line fairly hard to were the line of the swivel slips through the knot of thhe balloon therefore letting it to sink to the bottom and the balloon floats away!

Hope this helps !
