Surf Casting Shark Rig sharks 2'-5'

I am planning out my rig for Surf casting for small sharks 2'-5'. I saw some tutorials on Surf Casting terminal tackle for sharks, and it included a 12/0 Circle hook, Doubled over #15 single strand wire and double haywire twist, swivels, and 500lb. mono topper. Not sure about leader length.

For the size sharks I am hoping to catch, it seems that may be a little too much. Does anyone have any suggestions on what a good setup would be for these sized sharks. I will be using a 12' surf casting rod, and either a Fin Nor OSF, or a Penn Spinfisher V, with 65lb. braid mainline.

Thanks everyone, this is fun putting all this gear together!

Peace!

Ray

Sounds like you watched the BlacktipH videos. Good stuff there.

There is no such thing as overkill :P The reason for doubling up the #15 is to keep the wire from kinking up. Those rigs are basically just shorter versions of monster shark rigs, so you dont have to buy additional materials for making rigs, just use what you already have. (if you have it)

Fishin over there by Pompano, there are a lot of rocks. The 500LB mono is not really over kill when you think about it. I have pulled up sharks and had slices and cuts in the mono section of the leader. Those tippers jump and spin all over the place too. That heavy mono can handle the sandpaper skin.

I suggest making the leader 5 or 6 ft of mono and then 1 - 1.5 ft of wire.

The set up above is perfect for 6ft blacktips/spinners. Use a 14/0 cir., about 2.5ft of single stand wire, swivel, 6 to 10 ft of 200lb test, and swivel to the main line. You will be doing just fine.

Good Luck and post some photos

Thanks very much Snook Hunter! That's the the setup I will have then. Do you feel that 2.ft. of single strand will be fine with just the basic haywire, or should I double it over? Thanks man, and have a great week!

Peace out!
