Sharker from Tennessee........oh the irony
Hello all, let me start by saying the amount of knowledge on this forum is absolutely outstanding. I've been researching pretty extensively over the past few weeks on surf fishing for sharks in South Florida. I'm not a newcomer to surf fishing but I am to shark fishing. Most of my fishing experience is with fresh water, but I've spent some time on Atlantic beaches surf fishing and on brackish waters in Jacksonville fishing for reds and rays, but in late September I will be in Sanibel for a week just about a mile south of Bowmans beach and I'm looking to catch my first decent size shark. I hear shark fishing around that time usually slacks but I'm gonna try anyway. Now onto the beating of the dead horse........casting gear for LBSF. I've usually use much smaller (and older) gear for general surf fishing. A Penn Peer 209 and a Silstar CT70 coupled with a 10' hurricane and a 11' Silstar 999. I've had my eye on the Penn 4/0 wide with a 10'-11' foot rod and either a OM or Ugly Stik. Now my question is should I scale my reel down to say a Penn Jigmaster or or Diawa sha-30 for ease of casting? Would I still have enough line and drag to fight a 5-7 foot shark? Will I even reach the sharks of that size casting from the shore there? I've searched and searched but most of the newcomers want to use spinning reels with 30 foot rods and all the conventional guys use 9/0 and up, yakking baits. Opinions and tips are greatly appreciated!
