Welcome aboard Captain Chip.Looks like you are on a path to leaving your mark in the shark fishing world and i feel honored to have you here with us.The Tiger record seems to be within your reach and that what elevate you on a world class stage to do anything you want in the fishing world. The sky is the limit then. You would be the man to beat Walter Maxwell and his incredible record that has stood since 1964. WOW i hope you do it!!!

One of my projects is to go interview Walter Maxwell's widow and to fish with a genteman that is on thios board that was there the day Maxwell caught his Tiger. He saw the whole thing take place and he has asked me to come fish with him and I am now even more interested in traveling up for some new adventures and the chance to make some shark fishing history.Maybe E Polk will join me after we fish the panhandle we can cruise to fish the Carolinas. Looking forward to seeing some of your monster shark catch pictures and reading the stories that go with them..

The blacktip was 74 inches long, but its was missing a good chunk out of the tail. I would say it would have been about 80 inches with a full tail. It wasnt a real long one, just REAL girthy. One of the wider ones I've seen. Your 6 footer had to be over 100 pounds...got any pictures?

Yes, I'm all about catch and release. The only way I'll kill a large shark is if a very large sum of money is in it (tourny)...or its a record. Hate to make it sound like I can be bought, but its tough to turn down thousands of dollars for 1 shark. I brought in a 530lb tiger in this past spring to win the SC Edisto shark tourny...I won a few thou and became the only one to win it twice (2 yrs in a row), and I honestly ALMOST let the thing go when I had it boatside. I HATE KILLING THEM.

Unfortunately we didn't have a camera :( , live and learn.
I'm hoping to get a bigger black tip this year, and even get the picture.

Thank for the encouragement!
His story is so interesting, I'm really surprised it hasnt wound up on the discovery channel or some short story movie. I was in Myrtle Beach 3 years ago for a bachelor party. I stopped by the Cherry Grove pier where the record was broken out of curiosity. I was surprised I didnt see anything significant about the feat. I mean, its a world record off a pier...and the only thing I noticed was a blown up picture in the bait shop/office of the shark with Walter. No big plaques, no stories, nothing but a picture in the shop. I guess they just dont want the exposure. I went to the end of the pier and saw a couple of fisherman. Those guys dont mess around....had a big livewell set up and kites. They were more interested in Kingfishing than anything.

I noticed the same thing. I use to king mac fish out there alot years ago, now the only time we are in that area is on a family vacation, and then I have to drive north to NC to shark fish every evening. It sucks that the county that the world record tiger was caught in is a NO SHARK FISHING from the beach county.

the beach shark fishing laws are pretty ridiculous in several areas in SC. The myrtle area being one of them. You don't want to be caught with anything bigger then a drum reel on the beach, because alot of the enforcement is left up to the interpretation of the officers, and they do write tickets, not just warnings. I am not positive but I think beach sharking at Hilton head may be a no no also.

Yeah, shutting down the entire county is too much. Especially on the "fenway park" of fishing areas. Hilton Head is the same, you arent allowed to shark fish anywhere from the shore.

I really like the beaches up that way. The water, for example like at Edisto, always looks a little menacing. I imagine those big tigers patrolling out there under the camo of that brown choppy water.

Has there been a tiger over 10' taken from a Carolina beach within the past few years? I can't remember seeing one but there has to have been a few? The offshore fishing sounds amazing.

Welcome to SFSC
