Newbie from Idaho
Hey everyone as you can see Im from Idaho but im gonna be in Florida for three weeks this summer and really wanted to do some shark fishing. I have a penn 330 on a twelve foot ugly stick with a couple hundred yards of fifty pound braid on in that we use for sturgeon up here. Ill also have a seven footer with 250 yards of twenty five pount braid. I know that thats not enough for the really big fish you guys are pulling but I was wondering what you guys recommended running with that gear. Just for refrence the sturgeon we get run up to ten feet and around eight or nine hundred pounds.
Welcome to the site
I got some family out their that live on lake Coeur d'Alene... awesome lake!
As far as your gear... in most places in FL braid run straight will have you cursing after you get cut off when hooked up on a good fish. Most of us that run braid use a pretty heavy mono top shot. If I had the little penn I would run about 75 yards of 60 or 80lb mono on top of your braid.
It really depends on your location. I have fished spots in FL that I could run only a 12 foot piece of 130lb mono shock leader connected to 50lb braid with no issues. Then there is spots where even 60-80lb get cut off.
IMO your a little under gunned for shark fishing, not to say you couldn't catch some decent fish with your set ups but dont be surprised if you put a decent bait 40 feet off the shore, hook up and watch every bit of line leave your spool

Thanks guys I really appreciate the info. I'll definantly keep the top shot idea on the top of my list. And ya the sturgeon are a ton off fun. We are shore bound because we just have yaks and well they're no big enough to navigate the big rapids. We just hike in or fish somewhere we can drive. We will be in the keys for a week and on sanibel for a week so if anyone has any general tips they could help me out with there that would be awesome. One more question and this may sound crazy I'm not sure but has anyone hopped back on the yak when they're about to get spooled? Maybe tie the two boats together for added stability. Just a thought let me know what you guys think. Oh and batrayz if you were going to make a trip specifically for sturgeon I would head up to the Copper River I don't know if you have heard anything about it but they are catching some absolute hogs up there. In the 1000+ pounds range.

I have never heard of Copper River, I have been hearing stories of those 1000+ from the Columbian River, Frazer River and the Snake
Ya I've never gotten into anything that big but they are definantly out there. It is a bit hard for us being shore bound. Most guys are running jet boats on the snake and well the money for a jet boat is pretty hard to come by for two highschool kids. Oh well some day!
