Hey Manny, welcome. My son & I & about half a dozen of us also shark the shallows on the south pier as well & we have probably have crossed paths out there. I normally head out on the week ends,so shoot me a pm & let us know next time your heading out so maybe we can all hook up.
thank you will and i belive ive seen him around. i def do remember you guys and thanks for telling me about this club im def a proud member. btw cape haze i will def see you on sunday cant wait to get that bad boy made. if n e one is interested sat night we have a great outgoing tide starting at 1030 until 2 am which will be great on the skyway ill most definately be there. Thanks again guys for all the replies. one more question should i use about 8 ft of number 19 wire on as my leader or is cable better. ive also heard that you should use the least amount of wire and to use electrical tape. what do you guys reccomend
I think its honestly a matter of preference,me personally wont use anything other than stranded cable & the other guys on here use solid. BUT,which ever cable/wire you use, dont cut yourself short...short meaning anything less than 12 feet! Your line can easily get tail whipped using a short leader & in some cases, the shark can get wrapped up in your leader & result in a tail whip also. But Manny, the biggest thing you need to pay attention to if your using a long leader & happen to land any shark, is paying attention to where your legs & feet are with all that cable/wire laying/flopping around while trying to beach or gaff a thrashing & very pissed of shark..things can go bad very very quick!
I like cable over #19 wire. Even though it is a little bit more expensive i think it pays off it doesnt kink, Its easy to work with, and you can catch more than one fish on it without it goin bad on you. I use 1/16 galvanized cable from home depot and i have no problems with it. If you go with the American fishing wire it is 19.99 for 30ft as opposed to 25c a foot at home depot. Or you can go to ebay and buy a bulk spool of pvc coated 1/16 aircraft cable if you wanna do it big!
Another option to home depo if your in the st. Pete area is a place called F.I.S.H #727 391 7380 (across from Maderia Beach Middle school) They have everything that you will need to rig leaders including #19 wire. They sell in bulk or by the foot. Another place I get my cable in bulk is Certex. They're located just off of 49th st north
