Hello South Florida Shark Club

My friends call me Bill or Captain but most people know me as Sharkman, the moniker was put on me some 40 years ago by a newsman and I've given up on discouraging it. It's NOT my ego!

I've spent many years as a commercial fisherman, for a few years capturing live sharks for aquariums like Marineland, Miami Seaquarium, Sea World, etc. I've been a shark hunter and researcher of shark migration and behavior most of my life (see http://www.sharkmanofcortez.com ) but some of my earliest shark adventures were when I fished with rod and Penn reel as a teenager off Siesta Key, Anna Maria Island and the Florida Keys. My best challenges were fishing from fixed and solid ground beach or pier.

I'm now persuing shark attack data and working on marketing my upcoming book. I'm pleased to see the South Florida Shark Club encouraging more interest in fishing for sharks as I was disappointed at the decline of the sport after many years of environmentalists waging their anti-fishing propaganda. I always believed men with the desire for real adventure and challenges, along with their women would somehow prevail. I look forward to talking with you all.

Good hunting and I welcome any and all news and debate.

Rageds,
Captain Bill

To my fellow shark hunters and their families-
Today I received in the mail a package from William Fundora, our president, with past newsletters, bumper stickers and a pledge to purchase some of our books once the deal is finally inked with the publisher. (Thank you!!) Regarding the newletters: I read with disappointment the shaft you talented fishermen have had to deal with as the powers-to-be stay focused against you. Those of you who wish to follow your right to fish for the world's most dangerous preditors need to remain united and determind to hold onto your sport. This is your right as Americans!

I too have fought against the voodoo scientists and environmentalists who wage rediculous propoganda to supposedly protect the shark. Their reality is to protect a billion dollar tourist industry. (no grining jaws on the beach mean no grinning jaws in the water!) I know this because I once worked within the Chamber of Commerce and Mote Marine Laboratory (now designated by Congress as the foremost research facility on sharks). Money is the name of the game and unfortunately sport fishermen don't yield as much power as Game Hunters or the National Rifle Association. No American President has ever opposed the rights of the National Rifle Assocaition. Sportsfishermen need to gain this type of stature. In 2010 I plan to challange the status quo!

Men and women and their children who fish for sharks are also American consumers. Budweiser Beer, Penn Reels, Mako Boats, etc., all want your business! I have decided, through my book, to get back into the boxing ring and wage an all out war against the untruths that persist. In 2010, as author of Sharkman of Cortez, I will speak on behalf of sport fishermen, and your club-if you wish-for the exposure on a national level as we travel city to city to promote my story. I'll do this for my sons' rights as well as yours. And I intend to educate the public as to how little those powers-to-be care for public safety and your right to bait a hook and pursue your passion in Federal waters, compared to the protection of those preditor sharks swimming along our coastline in increasing numbers.

God Bless America,
Captain Bill
p.s. your bumper stickers are proudly adheared to both our cars!
