hello everybody, new to florida, new to sharking
Well, I just moved to the ft myers area from new jersey.
I grew up on a small freshwater lake so I fished a lot when I was younger but my dad passed away when I was 13 and ever since then I put all the fishing on the back burner since I only really fished with him.
I have I would say some 30 year old surf rods I inherited, one ugly stick 6 foot tall, one unknown 8 foot and another 12 foot, with Penn jigmaster reels.
I said what the hell and hit captiva beach this past Tuesday the 28th with a small rig I picked up on the way, I ended up catching a 4 foot hammerhead. Needless to say I was pumped my first shark attempt ever and within the first hour I cast out I had a shark.
But, as I said I am very new to the hobby and have little idea what equipment I need. I have spent lots of time Googling it and I have a wish list.
I want to buy at least one heavy duty setup new, and build a small army of rods as I gain knowledge.
I would rather have overkill then inadequate.
So, what I'm asking you guys (the experts) is what do I need to reel in the big ones.
I want to go with a 12/0 reel , that's all I know.
And as embarrassed as I am to admit... I have no idea what tackle to use or rigging or anything. I have never surf fished also, so any pointers on that would be great also ha
I would love to meet up with some of you guys and join in on the fishing and take in any advice like a sponge
Thanks everyone!
blacktip H on youtube was what helped me the most when i first got into shark fishing joshes videos go through the basics. also this website will help a lot, go back and read previous shark reports and read the how to guide, but the best thing to do is to go out and fish to get accustomed to it. You can never stop learning in fishing. good luck
Hot Reelzs is right if you check out Josh's website and do alot of reading on this site and just start off with the basics. The more comfortable you get with catching sharks then you can start upgrading equipment and tackle. Just get your foot in the water(lol)
and see whats out there... By the way welcome!!!!
