At 15 feet this is #2 in our list of biggest.
At 14 feet 11 inches this looks like #3 in our list.
At 14 feet 6 inches the current world record of 1280 lbs caught by Capt. Bucky Dennis off Boca Grande Pass in 2006 looks to be #4 on our list of biggest.
It seems like every small beachside town on Florida's west coast has a story to tell about a huge hammerhead shark that scares the wits out of the locals and tourist alike.Well the small seaside resort city of Anna Maria island is no different.In this 1973 picture we found at the Rod and Reel pier the hammerhead is said to be 17 feet long and 1372 lbs.The shark was caught on a rope and chain.I myself can't see that the shark is that long although it is very hefty,,,,,,i'd say maybe close to 14-15 foot long,,,,it's only my personal estimate.You draw your own conclusions.

There are bigger ones out there . Has anyone heard of Old Moe at Bahia Honda in the Florida keys or Hitler in the Tampa Bay area?Those two are 16 ft and supposedly 20 ft the latter one
I wonder how many of us in this website while shark fishing have hooked a shark of that size without even knowing it. Maybe one of those 12/0's or 14/0's that many of us has seen getting stripped have a fish way over a 1000lbs on the other line and we are thinking its a hammer 500 or 600lbs. That to me is one of the many beauties of shark fishing you never know what you might hook.

Hey everyone, Just telling about the monster hammer on the panhandle. Roddie Pate said over 20'. Him and Elmo fed him 2 baits one on a 16 and one on a 14 at the same time, it stripped them both fast. They called him Joe. Roddie said he ate 250 bonita in one pass by the pier " looked like a vacume cleaner" said Roddie. he also said his head was 6 feet wide. He hung around for several years, the shark fishermen would not even fish when he was arround. Sometimes he would have several leaders hanging out of his mouth dragging along behind. It was killed in the mid 70s by the coastguard with a 50cla. It had turned a small boat over and was trying to eat the boater when a coast gaurd chopper rescued him. Roddie Pate caught a 14'2" female Greater on his 16/0 off navare pier in 1981. It must have been nice fishing before the long liners destroyed them for pure greed.

I was right there when Elmo and Roddy hooked Old Joe and both of em did get smoked he was a MONSTER In those days it was not uncommon to feed the big boys at Pensacola And Navarre Pier
Lots of sharks and lots of unbelievable sharkfishing 10 12 solid runs a night 4 or 5 fish to the rope What a ride. Times have most defintely changed.
