Tackle for Surf fishing 5 ft. and under Sharks

Howdy everyone,

Now that I am getting hooked on land based shark fishing, I am looking to purchase a solid Rod, Reel, and Line outfit for my adventures. To get to some specifics, I'll be targeting sharks 5 ft. and under from shore. I'm just learning, but I think most of those might be blacktips and spinners. I'm not sure if there are any other kinds that fit into that category as well.

I'm not looking for the most elite products out there. But some Solid rods and reels that I can count on for many years. I'll only be traveling to florida about three times per year, for several weeks at a time. But I hope to double some of this equipment for Trophy catfish back at home.

What would be the best options in these questions.

Spinning or Conventional? and best size and line capacity?

Type and Length of rod?

What lb. test line(I like braid)?

And any type Brands you recommend for these products would be much appreciated.

I can spend up to just under $200 for a reel, and up to $150 on a rod. But if I can find Solid outfits for nuder those prices that would be very awesome too.

Thankyou everyone, I am really excited about this new found enjoyment in my life.

Have a great week!

Ray

My suggestion would be a spinning reel for those smaller sharks. Penn Spinfisher V, or Fin Nor are both great reels with huge drags. Load either with 80lb braid and you could handle sharks bigger than 5'.

Penn Squall are great reels for cheap. A lot of guys like Penn Senators and you could get a 6/0 or a 9/0 for less than $200. Both could handle sharks over 5'.

Are you looking for a boat rod or a surf casting rod?

I hope this helps

It's a carcaradon carcharias. It's a great white shark.

Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him.

I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout sharkin'!

Batrayz,

Thankyou, VERY helpful man! No, I dont believe I'll be doing any boat fishing. I would be specifically fishing from the beach. Both Surf casting and kayaking out.

I forgot to mention, that I own a Shimano Tekota 600 Levelwind Star Drag, and a Penn Fathom 25LW Levelwind Star drag at home for my heavy duty catfishing I do back in Illinois. Both Reels can hold up to about 370 yards of 65lb. Braid.

I dont really know how those types of reels will be able to translate over to shore bound shark fishing. If they would work ok, that would be awesome. Or else I like the sounds of those Spinning reels your talking about.

I guess a big question is, how far out do I need to get a bait out for the 5ft. and under sharks.

Thanks a million man! I'm sorry about all the questions, I'm just trying to get the right setup, and knowledge of what to do.

Peace Out, and have a good one!

For the smaller sharks, a SSV 6500 would be fun with a 10' surf rod. For south florida, I recommend something bigger b/c you never know what will take the bait!

Penn Torque 12' Surf rods are great. The Penn SSV's are great, get a 8500 or bigger with 65LB braid.

The ocean master surf rods from bass pro are great too. You can sometimes finds them on the recondition rod rack, with zero defects for like $50!

Stick with graphite for the surf rods, the fiberglass ones cast like noodles.

My friend uses a Fathom 40LW for tippers. Works very well.

I haven't owned a Spinning Reel since I was a kid, and I don't have one now, so I really think I'll be getting either that
Fin Nor OFS Spinning Reel, or the Penn Spinnfisher V to give me a good assortment of reels for different situations.

Now that I've Narrowed those reels down, I just need to find a good Surf Rod. So I will look at some that you guys have mentioned.

The spinfisher is great. The only bad thing I ever heard about them was: On the first run of reels from Oct. 2013, they did not grease them up properly at the factory in china. This lead to some wear and tear and possible corrosion. I had one warranted out, no questions asked (SSV4500).

The 9500 and 10500 didnt come out to the following spring so this has not been an issue with those sizes.

Now for the Surf Rod, I am looking between the Ugly Stik Big water Spinning Surf Rod, and the Ocean Master Spinning Surf Rod.

Also need to choose a size. Just dont know too much about that. I guess if I want the most distance maybe a 12 footer. But I dont know how I would handle that size though.

Do people usually start out small and work up, or go by how much distance they want to get right from the get go?

Thanks a mil, and peace out everyone!

12 feet is pretty standard for a surf rod. I wouldn't recommend starting small and eventually going bigger, that just leaves you unprepared. It usually is a matter of starting cheap and upgrading over time to match the style they develop. At least that was the case for me.

My first sharker setup was a surfcaster combo from Bass Pro Shop. I didn't know if I was going to stay in the sport, so I cheaped out. It's still great gear after a year of shark/beach/rookie abuse, but I've since played around with other peoples higher quality gear and you can tell the difference right away. I still fish with it every time along with my Penn Senators and it still fights the big ones. Though once you start paddling out your baits, you'll be glad you did!

Rod: Offshore Angler Power Plus 12 foot surf caster rod about $30. I've beaten the hell out of this thing and it can still fling a big bait and take in any blacktip.

Reel: Offshore Angler Sea Lion SL80 about $50, but it goes on sale a lot. I paid $30. This spinning reel packs 30 POUNDS OF DRAG!!! That's almost as much as my Penn 9/0 Senator!

Regarding line, I've had problems with bargain braid so I'll recommend quality. Get yourself a 300 yard spool of 50 lb. Power Pro braided fishing line, it's the finest available.

All said and done I spent less than $100 for new gear and I'm satisfied with it. If I get 5 years out of it, I'll be happily surprised.

I use a Penn BTL8000 Battle loaded with approximately 400 yards of 80lb braid on a 12 ft Penn Torque Surf Rod.
