Just picked up a 542 full length but was wondering if I could cut it down to 8'6" like a 540 would it be the same or no?
also if anyone has a 540 they would trade it for!

Hey Chank:

I personally wouldn't touch it. That 542 you have is a piece of history now.

A cut down 542 will never equal a 540. The butt diameter of both rods are .875 but the tip on a 540 is 12 and a 542 is 10. The 540 was rated for 45 # line and the 542 only 36#. ]The taper on the two rods are not the same, close, but not the same. Of course if you want to cut the blank at both ends, it would come out pretty close but you can't just cut a foot and a half off the butt and expect to get a 540. As has been said, don't cut it. It makes a tremendous heavy spinning rod full length. Cast a mile and whip up on big tarpon or drag those really big snook out from under the pier or bridge.

Not right now. I get used rods from time to time. If I get one I'll post it on here.
