Am I Good?

I would like to know two things. Am I a good caster, and am I casting far enough for sharks around 5ft. I have a penn 209 on a shakespeare pro touch 12ft surf rod. I removed the levelwind and consider my cheap beater/do whatever rod. I have 110yds of 50lb braid under 20lb mono, then another 80yds of 50lb mono. So to the point, I can cast this setup 80yds (the whole topshot) with either a 4oz or a 5oz, it doesn't matter. That is standing on the lake shore in my neighborhood. I can get about 60m60 at the beach, and the whole 80 is out there if I wade first. Sorry for the long post. I am asking this because I was gonna get a penn sargus 8000 for casting but don't see it casting much farther for me. I would rather put the sargus money towards a penn 9/0 and a kayak which I should hopefully be getting a yak around christmas.

The 60m60 was supposed to be 50-60yds.

in several areas we catch them right in and behind the breakers, sometimes just around 30 yards from the sand.

this is a 78" sandbar caught right behind the breakers last month on an Abu 7000ct with 300 yards of 30lb braid and 100 yards of 30lb mono on top.

When it comes to casting baits out for sharks distance isn't always a factor depending where you fish. Best thing to do is get there during the day and study bait patterns, see if you can see sharks, etc and cast in that spot. Most beaches have a gut right off the beach before it gets shallow again. When I cast out baits a lot of times I will catch more sharks 10' from the beach than casting 50yds out. Another beach I fish the gut is 30yds out so thats where I put the bait and usually am very successful. If you're in places where its shallow for a long ways out then I would think casting as far as you can is good.

Best thing I recommend is put out a few baits all at different distances to figure out where they're at. Put in you're time and don't get discouraged if you don't catch anything.

I've Noticed That On Sand If You Get Your Bait Past The Breakers Or Just Inside The Wash Your In The Strike Zone!!! At Least Thats How South Beach Is, Thats Why When Anyone Is Surf Fishing We Fish Near Goverment Cut Jettys. The Bait Thats Comming Around The Beach From The South,Or Comming Up The Beach From The North, Gets Into The Jetty Edies And Is Smashed. Every Zone Is Different So What Works For Some Works Different For Others :!:
