I got a call yesterday from Bob Keyes as I drove the SFSC RV on the way to the Indian River marine flea .Bob Keyes is a fishermen who fished with Elmo Horine at Ft pickens and Navarre pier during the 1970's and he confirmed having seen the pictures of Elmo's 8 ft 8 iinch great white shark caught by Elmo at the Navarre pier in 1969.The shark weighed 247 lbs and was caught during the winter months.Elmo was said to be the best shark fisherman of his times and was credited with many big sharks including a 15 foot hammerhead also from the Navarre pier. Many other large Tigers and dusky's ,big bulls and even a 13 foot silky shark was caught by Elmo Horine ,Bob Keyes,Roddie Pate and there group of hardcore pier shark fisherman .We had an extensive conversation on the shark fishing in the panhandle back in those days and he related a story how old Joe the 20 foot hammerhead stripped a 14/0 and 2 16/0's back to back one night,,,,,,,,,on the rods were Elmo,Bob and lastly Roddy Pate and they were powerless to stop the giant hammer with three massive Senators

Anyway I will research the Elmo Great white this coming week and see if we can't find a picture of the unprecedented catch somewhere. This would be the only time a great white shark has ever been caught from US soil .If anyone can help in this research please let us know.Thanks,,,,,,William.

Looking for anyone with information about this great white shark caught in 1968 or 69 from navarre pier by Elmo Horine .Pictures or a copy of a newspaper article would help us or maybe contact information for Elmo's living relatives would prove useful.this is as far as we know the only great white shark ever caught from a US shore.

Hey Will, i'm not positive but I think I heard a story about a great white caught off of the pacifica pier in california... they catch small thresher sharks there all the time.

Also I found this article about some crab fisherman with this 12ft great white found tangled in their crab traps in the bay of Oregon.

Just an average fisherman.
