In 1981 six years after Blackie Reasor smashed the world record hammerhead with a 703 pounder he caught from the Jacksonville pier, his record was surpassed by another Jacksonville angler while fishing from a boat.Richard Morse was out tagging sharks on a friends vessel when he caught the beast on 130 lb test. From his own accounts he was on top of the world after breaking a record that stood for 6 years.Shortly after these events the hammerhead world record would be broken three more times, each time by more then 200 pounds and always by Florida fisherman. The hammerhead record went from 703 lbs(Blackie Reasor),to 717 lbs(Richard Morse),to 976 lbs(James Eckhart)fishing with world class boat Captain Ralph Delph out of Key West Fl , to 991 lbs J.Ogle in the Suncoast Shark tournament out of Sarasota Fl,and finally after many years to Bucky Dennis with his monstrously big Boca Grande Fl 1280 pounder in 2006. In 1983 i competed in the Suncoast Sharkers shark tournament in which two world records were beaten, the hammerhead record (991 lb), and the dusky shark record(764 lbs) which still stands as the record for the species.
