Snakehead, smarter then they seem
So since my last report on snakehead fishing I have only been able to land two of them. I have deduced that the rain is a important factor for fishing for them. I have had on average one strike per trip with today being a high of four strikes.

The dreaded bird nest, cost me about 30 yards of line.

Bought some new line without reading, just looking at the breaking strain only when I got home did I realize that is wasnt PowerPro, but Eagle Strong a copy brand I have never heard of.

Some snakehead lures, they range from $5-10 and a little.

Rapalas will always be an international lure, these ones start at $15 and go from there. Just a little more expensive then state side

The first area I fish. I have only had a little success here.

This was the second place I discovered and I have had more success here then else where. Including my big boy

I haven't caught any fish here yet, but I have seen some massive 2+' fish here.

My battle gear

This is how your suppose to fish these baits, fast and steady

The 6 on the left were $30 altogether

Larger one that cost $9 sounds check, but from a country where a meal cost $1 that's a lot

Two nice hits off it today

Two more hits off this buzz bait like thing

Got a nice visit form a Malaysian Snail Eating Turtle
The last three days I have been on the border of Myanmar at a lake which is suppose to have superb Giant Snakehead fishing. The whole time I was there we caught nothing and didn't even get a strike.
It was one of those trips that don't got how you want. First got a snag on my last Krocodile Spoon and decided to swim for it. Got four line cuts trying to get it in the middle on the night. The next day went swimming for it again and was able to get it. That night I lost it in another abandoned fishing net in the middle of the river (pisses me off how Thais will leave a net when it gets old instead of destroy it or get rid of it smartly). Then while trying to hook the next with my bigger rod and heavier line a boat comes within 10' of the bank and catches my line. Spools half of my Curado before I broke it off. After that I called it enough and stopped fishing that trip.

The place I was fishing for two days

Nothing like the feel of a nice Rapala working underwater

Left a frog floating around on the surface, but nothing wanted that either

Time to switch rods

Diner, Thai style

The left overs I used as chum and suprisingly not even little minnows picked at it at all

Soap as bait? I tried it, no fish wanted to eat even though they say it is a very good bait.

Pretty close don't ya think?

A shrimp shop owner had a Amazon Red Tailed Catfish in his fish pond.

So of course the natural thing to do is catch it

Fairly easy to catch because there wasnt much slime on it

No room inside riding there, so I flipped open a folding chair and enjoyed some American candy, M&Ms

Made a trip to the Myanmar border, but they wouldn't let us cross it, only take pictures on it

Riding an elephant named Lady Gaga because it was a ladyboy the guide said

Nice Red Tailed Pipe Snake I caught in my backyard a few days ago, non-venomous
If you want to see more pictures I have a ton up on Facebook, feel free to add me, just send a message saying you from SFSC, because I get a lot of unwanted friend request now
name is Daniel Gordon Gross
We have a big snake head problem in South Florida. It is a different species from the giant snake head. People say they are excellent eating. These things have a lung and can actually navigate a short distance over terrain. Here's a pic of one we caught in my brother backyard. The sandal is a size 13 reef sandal (for scale)

Ya you have Northern Snakeheads in Florida, we don't have those here. I also took a video of one "walking" and they are very proficient about it.
There lung is how I find them, wait 10 minutes and they need to come up for a breath and you can see them.
WOW! GREAT REPORT,You look like you are having a real good time,
Those BUZZ BAITS are just the ticket for BASS here in the States Bat , you gotta try them when you get Home!!
They'd slay 'em over a weedbed I'm betting.
Bet if you threw the FROG into a lilypad bed & used the stop-&-go ,you'd be "IN"!
You know, that package of line looks familiar somehow.....I'd bet it's "POWER PRO "maybe?
Same colors/pkg.But mine was some kind of FLOURO,mono ,
It was years ago but I still have that line it just doesn't wear like others ,too bad they stopped making it
Anyway , be careful around MYANMAR { BURMA} ,Bat, there's supposed to be alot of fighting there!
Good Luck ,& Have Fun!

Ya the frog is where it is at the two best baits (so I am told I fish lure almost exclusively for them) are frog and eel.
The line seems fine, I don't know where it is made, but fishes the same as PP to me.
And we were suppose to be close to the fighting they said, but the border was very unpopulated by guards, the Thai side only had one guard with an assult rifle.

WOW,the fighting is all over Myanmar according to news,
I meant to ask you last post ,if any of those frogs/lures can do the "WALK- THE- DOG" Move?
You know how to do that right?
You just give the rod short quick twitches while you reel slow, ,keeping the rod down, pointed at the water , , & the lure moves side- to - side rapidly,
I've got some different plugs that do that , fish follow & hit even when they aren't hungry , just to kill it I guess????
the ZARA SPOOK is one.
Well , have fun

I have never actually tried to do the "walk the dog" with them. After experimenting with it I found the best is just a medium-fast strait retrieve as close to the shore as possible.
I have even seen snakeheads sitting on the shore with there backs out of the water waiting for food. Most of the time they are in less then 1' of water though.
And the bites are crazy. Sometimes they can be a boring "POP" and just suck the lure down, but normally they are aireal. I had a fish just 2' from the shore to try to grab my lure, three casts later I caught him.
They sound scary, good thing they don't get big like sharks,
They do sound pretty tough ,hard to kill, GOD above knows what will happen if they get too established here ,
Probably should put this in a seperate thread ,but I can't believe the hard times Florida is having with all the invasive alien species,
When I get back there ,moved down for good , I'm going to get in on some of those hunts for the snakes & whatever else Florida declares 'open season'on, it's too beautiful a place to have such problems,
I hear in my old 'turf' they are sick & tired of those D#@! lizards,Tegus&Nile Monitors,
Anyone here been on any snake hunts?

Not here. I am terrible afraid of poisonous snakes. That being said I love non-venomous snakes and catch them. Here there are over 200 species of snakes and more then half are venomous, so I have only been able to identify one before that I recognized as not venomous and caught.
In California every year my friend and I do a rattlesnake hunt and eat any big ones we find. He does most of the close encounter work.
I also hope to go out one night with a herpetologist and catch some more snakes here. I am looking for a reticulated python hopefully.
Watching Jeremy Wade RIVER MONSTERS right now, FLORIDA SNAKEHEAD Invasion
He says the first invader was "BULLSEYE SNAKEHEADS" ,then up in Maryland they found "NORTHERN SNAKEHEADS"
He was Fishing in a MIAMI Canal & had alot of strikes from Snakeheads;
I don't understand why the state lets these invasions get out of hand before they try to act , why didn't they use rotenone in the canals? they can always restock Bass & warmwater fish,

When the first came into the pond in Maryland they poisoned the lake and a surounding one. After that they were foundd in the Platomic and that was basically game over. They have done as much electro shocking as they can to catch them. But I dont seem them going away.
Lets just hope theyu dont introduce something to eat them now.
I hope to make it down there one day and try that kind of fishing for them.
