Not many avet owners I assume. Very surprised by this. While still doing the standard pre purchase research, they seem to be great reels . I was also surprised how hard the local tackle shops I got price quotes from attempted to push other brands on me.

How about a custom rod? Seems silly to not go that route after dropping so much on a great reel.

if you get a custom rod, get a real custom rod. get with the builder, have him fit the rod to you. match up different Uni butts, try different size straight through butts. set it up in a harness in different locations until YOU are comfortable and can have the rod built around you.

spending the extra cash on a "custom" just to have some fancy colors and a label isn't worth it.

go to a local shop and check out the IGFA rods. 80-130lb IGFA rods are stiff but kick ass on the beach. if your going to fish the pier a lot, look at the tuna rail rods. Calstar Grafighter GFGR 770XXXXH is a good one, if you want a lighter tip, go with the 770XXXH.
