Penn 16 0 Drag
Hey guys,
I am trying to replace the 5 drag washer system (The old thick black drag washers made of asbestos) in the 16 0 with the new HT-100s drag washers. However, i cant get the stack with the new drags to be the correct height. Any tips/tricks to get the right height on the drag stack? What kind of drag systems do you guys have in your 16 0s?

Hi Blake:
I'll give you a little tip here. Don't try Teflon washers. Yes, it is a lot smoother, but you don't have nearly enough drag.

Hi Blake:
I really don't have a recomendation for drag washers. I was a serious shark hunter some 40 years ago, and I did experiment with drag washers for my two 16/0 Penn Senators. I found no material back then that would hold up to the rigors of shark fishing. That said, I did find the teflon washers worked extreemly good on ultra lite rigs like the 5000, the 6000 and even the 7000 Ambassador reels. I was using Stren 5lb. test IGFA class line, and you could not overtighten the drag. It was just as smooth as you could hope for!
Back to your problem. I have read on one of these forums of a kit that you can buy to beef up the drag. If I remember correctly, I think the writer was talking about a Senator 16/0 reel? I'm not sure though. I'll see if I can find that thread again and read it over a little more carefully.
From my personal experience though I was never able to get satisfactory performance from anything I tried except for the original Penn drag washers.

Did you get it to work? I had the same problem with smoothies earlier in the year. Honestly I think you just have to work with it. When I opened my 16/0 for the first time after buying it there were two metal washers at the top to help with the problem, although I don't recommend that. I copied this from one of my posts elsewhere; maybe it will help.
(When using a smoothie thick five stack washer system) It looks like you have to throw away one each of the two types of metal washers. You will also get rid of two fiber washers leaving you with a ten-stack of washer components instead of fourteen. That ten stack, according to smoothiedrag.com should fit.
Someone posted in the reel and tackle section that
"The only issue I had was with the 14/0. They sold me a stack of 5 washers to replace the 7 washer stack. You are supposed to throw away one each of the inside metal washers with the slot and ears. When I reassembled the reel there was some free spinning of the star. As if the stack wasn't tall enough. Once you turn the star down to contact the stack the drag is smooth and has a wide adjustment range."
It not working to well, the stack size just isnt exactly right. What if i were to put to put an ht100 washer right behind the smoothie to increase the stack height. That would solve the height problem, but im not sure what kind of effects this would have on the drag performance
