im a new land based shark fishermen and i dont currently have the funds to buy expensive USA made reels. So, i think im going to try out Okiaya's 80w. If anyone can give some feedback or has owned or seen one of these reels it would be great.

I recently bought a Coleman CFS50W, an Australian company, but it was a Chinese manufactured reel. It was a POS! I have now taken it a apart, re-engineered it and turned it into a workable reel. I would not buy another low quality reel again, i have concerns about any heavy duty reel made in China. That being said Okiaya have been around a while now, check the reviews, their price is slowly creeping up towards that of the Avets/Penns/Shimano's and the price has to reflect the quality of the product, or you will get found out very quickly.

If you are new to land based shark fishing, you may want to start with a Penn 9/0, 12/0 (80w size) or Daiwa 900h. These reels will handle 98% of the sharks you may tangle with.

yea now that i just realized that i could get a used avet for the same price or a new one for just $150 more, i dont think im going to take the risk.

I want to start with gear that i dont have to replace afer i go for larger and larger sharks. i want to start out with something that i can keep for a while and not have to upgrade after i get spooled. i aleady have a penn 30tw that has a very interesting story behind it. i will start a thread on how i got that one soon.

Good choice.. American made is the way to go. Another option to consider is factory blemish avets. They can be found on eBay for a discounted price if you don't mind a multi-colored reel!

We have 2 okiayas and have landed multiple sharks over 8ft on them and they're holding up great.
