no coment.

I Was wondering who else seen that , lol i am surprised the hook straightened before the wire pulled thru the eye of the hook. a good haywire twist is a must if you are gonna exert alot of pressure. still confused on how hook straightened before leader pulled, not much to say for those hooks i guess

I was taught the way of the J. But I've picked up a few circles off the bridges and tied them on for tarpon and noticed that since they r hooked in the lip they can't fray u off as easy, but J hooks are fun for sharks cause not only can you hook him in the jaw but u have a chance to snag him.
P.S. @ captainfincrazy (i believe), u must have some super snap swivels, because what if the shark bites through the snap part or kink it off? e.g. the snap is made for bending, what is going to stop a shark from bending it?

Just an average fisherman.

Slasher- these snaps are used for long lining on commercial fishing boats & are purchased at Fisherman's Ideal Supply Warehouse (F.I.S.H) These guys up until not too long ago started selling outside the commercial Fishing Industry to the public. The bodies of these snaps alone are 5" long & 1/8" around & have a swivel thats rated at 900lbs. (total length 6 1/2") I have never seen or heard of one of these failing from any of the guys I shark with or through where I/we get them. As for cable being bitten off or through...not to date it hasn't happened & hope it doesn't either (lol) To be honest,I've seen more leader failure come from solid wire verse stranded cable over the years & this is just a personal observation I've made only from seeing it personally. I'm going to try & figure out how to up load a picture on here so you guys can get a better idea of what I'm talking about. As for kinks, the nice thing about this method is if there appears to be a fray or kink in cable you can easily release the clip & replace that section rather than make a new shorter leader.

Ok...heres another question pertaining to this post. How many of you guys off set your hooks? Do you shark them right out of the package/box or do you take the time to put an off set on them & file down a nice sharp fresh edge? Me personally, I do both to my J's

J's pull a lot. I fish circles and circles only. I will only use 12/0 gamukatsu big eyes tho everything else isn't sharp enough or bends like a mofo especially the mustad ones. every decent shark we hooked this year with j's came unbottoned, while every shark we hooked with circles hit the beach except for one big ass hammer that was 13+ that found the reef.. I know some people say circles don't stick but we've never had a problem with them finding a place to grab, all we do is reel until you can't anymore and lean way back and call for the harness and go to work. the harder we pull the more that hook burrys.

I carry everything from 6/0 through 12/0 and do carry some bigger. I prefer J hooks more hook-up I think

J hooks are going to gut hook the shark more often. Nothing you can do to prevent it. When the shark eats the bait and swims towards you, or just a little parallel...it gives her that extra second and she swallows it. The only time the shark is going to be hooked in the jaw is when she takes the bait and swims directly away from you putting tension on the line immediately. A gut hooked shark is a dead shark, a slooooow death.

I've been using Gamekatsu Heavy Duty Live Bait hooks for years, 8/0 and 9/0. You never gut hook the shark, it always catches them in the corner and since its not a full circle hook its easy to get your hook back with a dehooker. Its a smaller size hook, so if any of you guys try it...dont bury it in the bait...hang it on a corner. Its sharp as a needle, so you wont miss if it eats the whole thing. Just my 2 cents..

Are you talking about the HD Live Bait J hooks or circle hooks?

The HD Gamakatsu Live Bait hooks...but you have to get HD's or they could bend. I usually use the 8/0 and 9/0. I was pushed once to use the Owner Live bait hook, I bent it on the first shark and never touched them again.

The Gamakatsu is more expensive, but you never gut hook a shark and its a piece of cake to get your hook back with a dehooker. I'm not positive, but it looks like those guys in the MadFin shark tourny use that live bait hook, or something similar.

J hooks all the way for big fish. I only use circles when fishing for tips.

Thanks for all the replies on this one guys. I have been using mustad circles thus far, almost all 20/0s and have not seen one bend. They can be tricky to get out w/ dehooker though and I have a handful of cut ones. I think this is partially d/t the huge barb they have. I may try out some 11/0 EC Js this year if we find we are having trouble hooking up with the circles. For the most part they have worked well for us and I agree w/ John that they are easy to get back usually ending up right in the corner or lower jaw. We caught a surprising # of 5' range fish on those big 20s, some even smaller.

Chris
