Today we will post the First Week's BHC Leaderboard. This year the Big Hammer Challenge Shark Tournament has gotten off to a strong start with several big sharks over 10 foot caught in the US and Australia in the first week and the biggest a 12 ft 7 inch Hammerhead caught by a young avid shark fishermen on Florida's east coast. As is often the case with large hammerhead sharks this one was released in a timely fashion and witnessed by a several different Teams fishing the same beach, but unfortunetly it washed up dead on the shoreline the next day .This sort of thing always deeply concerns us because of negative public opinion when these dead sharks are in the local news media. We will continue to stress the importance of doing the quickest release possible while handling ALL SHARKS but specially Hammerhead sharks. We also stress the importance of applying maximum drag on your big sharks to shorten the fight time to decrease mortality rate of hammerheads which is higher than any of the other sharks we catch. Young anglers need to understand that this sport is carefully monitored by fishery authorities and law enforcement in charge of wildlife violations and the importance of conservation and protecting the resources cannot be overemphasized. The need to insure sharks we release survive and not wash up dead is vital to the survival of our sport in Florida and abroad. We are in touch with FWC and will continue to improve our relationship in order that anglers releasing sharks understand what the best methods are but make no mistake this is an ongoing education that we are all learning with more studies and time spent on the sand catching and releasing sharks.Next week I have a meeting with FWC Biologist and field officers to discuss shark mortality and how we can improve our techniques. Over the decades in this sport we have evolved and continue to learn and improve "best practices" to so that we may pass that knowledge along to everyone but specially BHC anglers and anyone who spends time in our site and wants to learn from our 5 decades in the sport. The FWC has has played a vital part in ensuring our shark fishing rights in Florida when many seaside communities have attempted to "Ban Shark Fishing" and we look forward to a continued respectful and productive relationship.
