One week into the 2013 Big Hammer Challenge Shark Tournament and we have seen many big sharks already caught including the first ever MAKO SHARK. All Teams the are putting in incredible effort to catch sharks in a week with less then favorable weather throughout the state.Windy stormy weather has been over the state at one point or another during the first week of competition.Unfortunately we have had to disqualify some sharks in pictures without a measuring tape and still others that have been impossible to see because of blurry pictures or lack of REQUIRED PICTURES,or for other reasons etc, etc, etc. IN next year's BHC we will not allow any cel phone pictures and we will also issue wide vinyl measuring tapes to all Teams competing as was done in Josh Jorgesen's 2013 Blacktip Challenge Shark Tournament. As tournament director I always try and simplify the requirements for each shark to be submitted and it is frustrating to see so many sharks without PROPER DOCUMENTATION.
WE WILLL ISSUE THIS WIDE VINYL TAPE AS STANDARD MEASURING DEVICE FOR EVERY TEAM IN NEXT YEAR'S BHC TOURNAMENT
MARK RESTO WITH HIS 8 FOOT 10 IN LEMON SHARK
Another issue that I want to address is the wrong 'clique'/clannish' impression that is sometimes portrayed on this site and in BHC post by some members of the South Florida Shark Club. I want to apologize for some of the smirky commentary that I see some members post here from time to time .I am concerned because I want to make clear that I DO NOT CONDONE of such behavior nor will it be acceptable. The SFSC is the Elder in the land-based shark fishing community with over 45 years in the sport and is supposed to lead by example so If you post INSENSITIVE SMART-ASS CRAP I will simply delete it and you will be getting a call and warning from me.As President of the Shark Club it is my duty to see that we are respectful of ALL Anglers competing in the 2013 BHC and on this website in general.
DECEPTIVE SPOT CREDIT
Also by posing deceptive information while commenting on catches by giving credit to fake spots as places where sharks were caught to throw off other competitors is childish and can actually BACKFIRE when cops see a growing number of fishermen there and start a Crackdown.Think twice before you post the BS. I don't find it amusing or RESPONSIBLE (we are not children). Also if you notice some discrepancy in a catch or the Required Pictures you can comment and make a post in a respectful way without being slanderous .It is NOT ACCEPTABLE IS TO MALICIOUSLY BASH ANOTHER COMPETITORS CATCH instead PLEASE address the problem by filing a FORMAL COMPLAINT, or SEND ME a Private Messege (PM)or call me 786-797-5712.A tournament committee has been set up to deal with problems and decisions are made via a vote.We go out of our way to run a smooth Tournament where all anglers are RESPECTED AND CONSIDERED and No ONE is made to feel as an outsider.
Take heed to what I write here and you know who you are THIS TOURNAMENT IS ABOUT THE SPORT AND PROMOTING IT AND GAINING A MEASURE OF RESPECT AND ACCEPTANCE FOR
ALL IT'S ANGLERS
NOT JUST FOR A SMALL GROUP OR CLIQUE.I want to offer a SINCERE APOLOGY to anyone who has felt in any way offended. Please Forgive those who have been less then friendly or those who have overstepped there role as fishermen participating in this tournament.
SHARK FISHING WITH THE KIDS
We are grateful to see families fishing together in the 2013 BHC.As parents who enjoy fishing with our children but also fish tournaments we sometimes get so caught up in the competition that we may forget to include them in our outings so here I will remind you to step back and look at the bigger picture and the IMPORTANCE OF SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR KIDS. Fathers with their sons and daughters and children learning the sport by the example of the parents or the guardians.A good example is Diana Coupel who fishes with her daughters and post sharks although she is the only adult on the beach she still manages to set up camp, yak baits, leader fish ,take pics and protect her kids all while competing in the tournament. We aim to attract more families that want to practice this sport and we aim to create a family friendly envirement for those who compete in the BIG HAMMER CHALLENGE.
