Official 2010 Big Hammer Challenge Reports,Pics-Leaderboard
He's not on the forum and can't read this.. dont let some guy come over here and stir things up. Lets fish, we have a tournament goin on here, lets not get distracted. Yea he said some stupid stuff, but who cares, what does it change? Really nothing. We're still guna fish, if we decide to take a frieken 2 hour drive to fish martin county, whoopty doo, him making some stupid coment isnt guna stop me from fishin. I personally love my spots here and prob wouldnt even wana waste the gas. I'd say take off all these threats, have our forum stick to fishin, and let him think he's the best on his own, doesnt make any difference to me. He accomplished what he wanted to stir things up, but you see we're better then that, let it roll off your shoulder and show em what southfloridashark club is about. We're a family that catches BIG ASS SHARKS!
2 times that, focus on catching monsters, don't take the bait!
hey, it's mark and i'm glad to see that most of the teams are pulling out some nice fish and keeping the spirit of shark fishing and fishing in general at a positive level. I haven't gone out fishing far from home in a long time but have been doing good in Biscayne bay with snapper, tarpon, snook, and jacks. During my spring break i went out to the keys with Willie and we sum how had a misunderstanding and I almost got stranded down there, my apologies to everyone. But while I was down there me and JD Fagen had a little luck pulling up nice mangroves, ceros, a black grouper, a 20 pound cuda, some jacks, and a nurse. JD F. has all the pics on his camera, i'm hoping he can email them to me or post them up himself. I'm sure ill see a lot of you guys from the club soon.
Just an average fisherman.

The nine foot barrier has been broken tonight(story and pics by Rey tommorow) .This week and very soon when the wind dies and the rains come the 10 foot mark will also fall.Maybe we can crack 13 feet in the last half of this year's Big Hammer Challenge!!
I like the man who faces what he must, With steps triumphant and a heart of cheer; Who fights the daily battle without fear.

This year by chance we brought together a new team made up of what i consider to be fisherman with the right qualities for competitive land-based shark fishing. They all have "the eye of the tiger" .They are all proven , hard working ,driven and love to catch big sharks.Good choices in fisherman like JD Fagan (jd553),Chris Salomoni(snook hunter)and Carl (cmoney)have been producing some nice sharks for our "Team Shark Fever."
For me the past few weeks have been extremely rough with the tournament starting and my father being gravely ill in the hospital has left little time for me to fish.
When you love a sport enough you find a way to participate so this week I saw a window opening up and we put together a plan to fish the calm waters of the west coast since the North East winds have been blowing hard and making it almost impossible to fish our favorite east coast beaches.
Aside from researching and writing about the history of Florida's land-based shark fishing making new friends has been the best benefit that I have gained from this forum. The other great benefit has been in giving back to the sport by teaching the new fisherman in our sport all that we have learned over the years.I get lots of gratification in helping others learn something new .One lesson I showed the fellas on this trip was the importance of staying away from braided lines except to use as backing way down in your spool(too many nice sharks are lost and expensive rigs lost because it is very unforgiving in Florida's beachside enviroment).
This trip with Chris Salomoni (snook hunter) the drive across Alligator Alley afforded us the chance to talk shark fishing and plan stategy.Shark fishing trips very much like this one have been one's which have forged friendships that last a lifetime.
On the beach we were joined by Chad (sharker33701) who drove south to meet us on the beach .All seven of our baits were deplyed by 9 pm shortly after the sun sank into the Gulf.We sat around and talked and got to know each other better while we waited for the action to begin. Both my fishing partners were blessed with fresh bait while I was "the jerk" again trying to make it happen with the carcasses of fish long dead and frozen stiff,,,,,,,,,should of known better, and I did ,but it just felt right to be back on a beach ,sand in my toes,my big guns out,and the possibility of an encounter with a monster in the cards once again.
Chad who's from Team Cape Haze Rods was first to get his bell rung.He was doing a fine job until his shark decided to swim left and i'm yelling at him "to put some heat on the fish" or he's gonna get wrapped on the crab trap that was directly to our left side .Chad was introduced to the use of a shoulder harness to take some strain off his arms and shoulders and he was grateful for some relief.Well Chad (Marlboro man )was huffin and puffin and asking for a drink of Moutain Dew when what he actually needed was an oxygen tank but he turned the scrappy shark just in time to save the night.
the release
The night continued and Chris lost a fish when he set up and the braided line popped(I hate it!!!).I told him I would take out his baits again but it was almost 1 am and my shoulders were in excruciating pain so i took some Motrin caught some quick zzzzzz's and woke up a short time later ready to bite the bullet.I yakked our both Chris's 9/0 and 12/0 in one drop. The water felt cold and the night was dark and earie but sacrifice for friends is sacred. The freshly deployed bonita was eaten a short while later and Chris was doing a fine job but his "running man"needed to get really running so he hooked his shark on it's second attack of the bait. The fight was on and Chris was in his groove and doing it like a pro.At seven foot six inches this lemon shark is almost a twin of Chad's 7 foot 5 inch specimen. The shark is documented and quickly released.Throughout the night I'm wishing for a fat pregnant 9 foot plus bull shark or a mogan Tiger which I know will gladly eat my old frozen half Amberjack baits but the water is still a bit cold for the bulls and tigers on the west coast yet.Fresh bait is best specially when the maneaters are not around yet---the lesson is driven in AGAIN, but my circumstances did not allow me any other option.I'm satisfied Team Cape Haze(Chad) has another shark as does Team Shark Fever(Chris). In the morning we pack it up and head to another beach which looks very promising if fished at the right time and with the right bait, but on this day we fell short of those two requirements. We headed home satisfied with a job well done and I with a new friend with whom to share my passion for shark fishing. Thanks Chad and Chris for a good time.
