REQUIRED PICTURES
All sharks caught in this tournament must be photographed with the secret item in the p1icture and then quickly tagged and released. We recommend the use of Digital cameras for photographing of your sharks. The secret item will be announced March 31,2009. The pictures of each shark are what we use to determine the winners so please be sure and do a good job of taking your two required pics of each shark.Make sure your camera is good working condition and you have a new set of batteries to last a while.
PICTURE ONE -OVERALL LENGTH PICTURE with secret item and measuring tape stretched out CLEARLY VISIBLE from tip of shark's nose to the tip of tail.
PICTURE TWO- must be a closeup showing where the tip of the shark's tail ends on the measuring tape.
All Sharks must be measured from tip of the nose to tip of the tail
WINNERS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE OVERALL LENGTH OF EACH SHARK.
Proper method must be used when measuring overall length of each shark(measuring
tape must not sag or wonder off the sharks centerline and should be stretched tight to where the sharks tail ends)Please follow this rule.proper way to measure each shark in The 2010 BIG HAMMER CHALLENGE
I know my pics ant that good. My wife was taking the pics and i thought alot more were taken. Glad she was there, would have been impossible to hold the tape streight and make a measurement. If I catch a shark that is how i name it. a fish is what it is and that fish is my11'9" tiger. Its hard to get a big fish like that out of the water like all the smaller ones in the pics. Me and Joey, that is 2 men wading around in the water with a beast trying to do the best we can. If there were a fish even close, I could understand a controversy and I would stand down. This tourniment ant gona bother me any way it goes. I caught a 950lb tiger shark and that is what matters not the bragging rights on a tourniment.

Big bait #153 for 2010 and big bait # 71 for the BHC. Monica, Joey and I was on our 2nd night of fishing in a row and getting very frustrated. We have spent more nights on the beach this month than at home. 17 nights total this month. 4 runs and we are thinking we are hunting a ghost. My reel went off about 5;10am a slow unsteady run. there was a boat kinda close and i had just woke up. I first thought dam but then my vision cleared and the boat was too far. Just been so long between runs. The reel quit and the boat went on by. 3 min later here we go again slow and steady. I let it go 50 yds or so and set the hook. Like hitting a brick wall. it started taking line for a while kinda slow and jerky. 50 min later we was looking at the dorsal just as the sun was comming up good. Joey got the leader and it took it and went 25yds or so. Her belly was already dragging. Joey got the leader again and i loosened the drag and I waded out to roap her tail. We pulled her up and got the tape and took some pics. It's hard to get everything perfict. I worked the 16/0 hook out of the corner of her mouth. Then i pryed 2 teeth out with my knife. It was too early to get perfect pics and too light to make a flash. I was nervous and wanted her back swimming asap. We put the tag in and i pushed her off. She swam off like nothing ever happened. Total lenth was 11' 9" and she was 80' around. thats right 80' girth. She was pregnate. She is gona have all those little ones soon. I guess she was over 800lbs. A fish of a life time during a tourniment. I got lucky. Iv been letting Joey have 3 and 4 reels and I just been taking mine. Kinda wish he would have caught it. Monica had the video camera and got the whole thing. A set of Jaws like that and i let it swim. Oh well she got lucky and so did i.
nice!!!!!!!in fact very nice!!!!!
William called it at the beginning of the tourney!
What will the biggest shark be this year ?A big Hammer in the keys or Boca Grande,a massive Tiger from Sebastian or Ft Pierce or can it be a submarine sized MAKO from the panhandle?Ernie Polk and his team will be working the Panhandle hard and you never know what they will pull out of there hat up there.
Any predictions fellas????????
I'm gonna predict a 12 foot 7 Massive Tiger from somewhere north of Jupiter,,,,,I hope!!!
Observation & experience speak again!

THE 2010 BIG HAMMER CHALLENGE HAS CONCLUDED
I want to send a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the 2010 Big Hammer Challenge. We are grateful for your efforts, we are grateful for the competitive spirit that propels anglers in this month long tournament to achieve extraordinary catches that rival the biggest catches made from million dollar boats;catches that deserve recognition by the rest of the fishing world but are oftentimes unrecognized.
We at the South Florida Shark Club recognize your efforts and your achievements. We at the South Florida Shark Club will continue to work on your behalf so that your rights to practice this sport in a responsible way are protected. If you were in any way involved in this land-based competition, well then you have observed how hard those fishing have to work to make there catches, and you know all the difficulties involved in catching sharks from shore. The bait must be caught or bought, different work schedules must be coordinated so team members can fish together, the weather must be right because a rough surf can kill a kayaker, rigs must tied, lines must be checked, reels must be in good working condition, but the key ingredient is the desire to test yourself against the elements and the hard fighting giants of the seas.A willingness to compete & overcome must exist in you.
Some in the land-based world refuse to put together tournaments because they believe competition creates strife among shark fisherman, but we believe competition pushes us to excel in land-based shark fishing to new heights as evidenced by the extraordinary catches made in the last several years in these types of tournaments.I consider myself an old timer in this sport and I have seen the evolution in this sport and I have observed where the fisherman in it have become more educated as to the plight of sharks and are implementing safer techniques for catching ,handling and releasing sharks. The internet has been the tool that has helped promote this sport and the tireless efforts of scientist has educated the world of our need to conduct our sport in a responsible way.
This tournament and others like it that are a month long and month and half long are not sprints but more a marathon and in a marathon you need endurance, stamina, you must pace yourself, plan strategy and observe what the other guy is doing and react to changing conditions in the road(the sea)and in the sky (the weather). These tournaments and how we conduct them are a work in progress and every year we learn more and can better prepare for the next one.We want shark fisherman to become better educated about sharks, and we NEED shark fisherman to develop safer techniques for capturing ,tagging, and releasing of sharks. If you are into killing sharks you are not the type of shark fishermman that is welcomed in this site,in this tournament or in this sport. We love our sport and care about it future so please consider that sharks are threatened so do all you can to asure there survival. If we continue to learn about sharks and how they are threatened we can better practice our sport and contribute to there research.By using circle hooks and by leaving your shark in the water when possible to get accurate measurements we have taken a few steps to assure a released shark is a surviving shark. It will take time but we will continue to stride for all shark fisherman to practice these safer techniques.I cannot gurantee it will happen overnight but I can gurantee you we at the South Florida Shark Club will continue to educate & work for responsible fishing methods.
We will continue to work with the scientific community to aid in shark research and to develop safer techniques that promote a captured shark's chances of survival after release. We welcome the those involved in shark research to join us in the field so we may contribute in any way we can in the study of shoreline sharks ,there feeding habits ,migratory patterns, and survival rates after capture. We have a bird's eye view of how sharks behave on the shorelines and our observations have much to contribute to shark studies. We are willing and able to cooperate with scientist and feel that by working closely together we accomplish more versus being on different sides of the fence.Often times we are the target of unfair attacks by conservationist but they fail to understand our history of cooperating with NMFS since the 1970's when Jack Casey ran the program.Sharks and there survival are important for our sport and demands that we contribute in any way we can.Again this tournament and others like it are a work in progress and we learn from our mistakes and get better over time so next year we will be more involved with shark research and those involved in it.Allready we have been contacted by scientist to lend our efforts for there research and we have wholeheartedly agreed to go forward with a collaboration for the summer months of 2010.
Thank you all for your participation.
The winners of the 2010 will be announced later today.

Fine fish there clak. How many did Hammer catch? He is on every page. I guess we may have to make a trip to Miami. Look forward to meeting the folks I'v been talking to on here. Gona bring a couple videos with me. That Sean Watson 9'8" Mako in the afternoon, on video. Big Tiger, on video. Yall gona love the end of the tiger vid. When I was waist deep following her tieing the tail roap, Monica videoed her feet. . A slight bit of cussin but some serious silence too. You guys catch alot of good fish consistantly, we just got lucky at the right time. I never looked at this tourniment as a competition, Just a good reason to fish more. I dont feel like we competed against yall, we competed with yall. If the tourniment would not have been on, we would not have been fishin. Once again I am honored! Joey said its the greatest accomplishment of his life!
