This is an older version of Shimano Triton TT50W single speed, level drag type reel that was recently serviced by me.
Because of the way how this reel was designed (one piece aluminum frame), the reel's drag was worked on to be smooth and to sustain over 70lb drag measured on digital scale at full spool.
I guess with this catch, this proves that a smaller reel can do a great job as long as the drag is properly serviced and high enough.
Also, on his newly wined Penn 12/0 in BHC, the reel was able to achieve 60lb drag, at full spool, but then the reel runs into other type of issues at that high drag pressure. Again digitally tested.

P.S. I wasn't there to see the fight, but i'm assuming that anytime that he crank more drag on the fish he had to use the railing.

All good points Boghy - these new lever drag reels have much more efficient drags because they are not connected to the gear at all so they do not go thru the gear reduction that a star drag reel does - they can achieve very high drag pressures with out fatigue or drag fade because of this efficiency. They can also handle the drag because of the machined aluminum one piece frames that are structurally much stronger than a component frame like the senators - dont get me wrong the senators have and will continue to get it done but there is no comparison to the newer lever drags. You can built up the drag systems of the senators to go significantly higher than stock spec's but the frames just can take the added pressure for very long without catastrophic failure. Smaller reels built up to increase their structural integrity and drags have been beating up large fish for several years - the charter boats that use to have all 130's switched to 80's and now to 50's - some are even going down to the 30w reels because of the technology available today - there have been several tigers and hammerheads in the 10'+ class taken on reels the size of 9/0's and smaller. With the smaller reels the "average" fish is a lot more fun to catch and some of the newer ones still have the power needed to get in the big boys - that recent 11'10" tiger report came in and the fish was landed with an Avet 50w and while it did take some line he was never close to being dumped !!!
