Southeast Floirda August Report Solo

Never posted a report here before, so I thought to share some SE Florida Solo fishing adventures for sharks last few weeks. Went out to my local public beach to get some bait. First cast I got into something that started ripping line off like no other. Needless to say, took half the morning to bring her in, no less with a crowd behind me. I was ready for a quick and safe release, too, because I had my shark setup with me as well as my battle bag. I only fish with spinning reels for sharks, so I don't usually have heavy rigs to lug around on the sand.

Went out for bait again at the same local public beach with all my gear. Wasn't expecting this but it ended my day with a smile. I was not smiling after I had to walk with it in the deep sand for about half a mile! My freezer was happy, though.

Finally had the bait I needed, so I headed up north to the Wabasso area to a little spot I frequent. I brought my Yak but the breakers were huge, so I just left it in the truck and decided to cast my baits. Sun was going down. Put out my baits on my spinning rod and within a few minutes, before I could even sip my beer, the hits and runs started.

......All in all, I caught 5 nice Blacktips within a short time...one right after another, practically. You know, sometimes my yaked baits sit out there for a long time but my casted baits get licked good. If anyone has not fished for these blacktips on spinning rods, it is one heck of a fight. They rip line like no other fish, they jump as crazy as Tarpon. They are spunky fish, for sure, both off the beach as well as on the beach!

Had one chuck of bait left, so I said "what the heck" and tossed it out. This was about 9pm. I was picked up again. Immediately, I knew it was not a blacktip but something else...something else VERY familiar. It was another lazy cast, too. I was worn out. Well, after about an hour of pulling and tugging, I finally ended the night with this...another nurse!

All and all, a great SOLO fishing adventure. Nurse to warm me up and a nurse to cool me off :D :D

Big Nurse for spinning gear. Which reel/rod did you land her on?

I used a Hanta GT rod with a Diawa Saltiga Expedition 8000H.....very capable setup. Handles the sharks very well for a spinning setup. That particular reel has a reported 72lb drag!

Thanks for sharing your report with us. Wabasso area is a good big shark zone you will nail some big ones there but be careful with the big ground swell there. Thanks.

The groundswells up there can get big, so if conditions appear out of the ordinary, I just cast my baits, which can work out just as good sometimes. Often, I am solo and just know when to leave the Yak in the truck. Thanks for the warning and concern.
