Cownose Ray gets DEMOLISHED!!
went down to sanibel beach over the weekend. had the wife and my little dog with us too. wanted to enjoy the day chasing down snook and watching all the sea life around us. had brought 3 rods with me to fish later on that night and a good choice of bait. i had cownose rays and a pup shark for the nites dinner menu. baits were all yaked out by sunset, thats when i lit up the cigar and waited for the noise that we all love to hear. at first my 9/0 went off and i did the running man after letting the fish run for awhile, as soon as i put the reel in gear it was on i had 2 real hard head shakes and than all of a sudden i was at a stand still to my amazement i was hung up on somethn on the bottom. as i tried and tried to budge the line free i finally get it loose. as i reeled in the bait all i had was 2 hooks trailing and what my wife thinks could have been an eyeball on the end of one of the hooks. i wasnt sure what it was but believe me or not it sure did look like the remains of what could have been a sharks eyeball. later on my spinning reel gets blasted it had the pup shark on it, i wasnt able to set hook on it all nite. so when i reeled it in all that was left of the bait was a tail. as the nite got later it got quite and the bugs were out in full force neither bug spray nor citronella candles and long sleeve shirts and pants could keep me from getting my body bitten, thats when i knew it was time to slowly start packing up. i took things back to the cottage little by little leaving my last rod out in the water with a cownose as bait. i highly recommend not too leave your rod all by its self and unattended when packing up for the night. anything could happen.... the pics will explain my missed chance on a very nice fish with a very BIG biting radius!!

I had this happen twice and then started hooking the whole rays the way bucky dennis does and have yet to be bait raped. Youtube search chew on this and ull find it. Also, he only uses a single hook and works fine, but if a second hook i just put it in the head. Although the handful of sharks i have caught using this hooking method (tiger, bulls, lemons) have all been hooked by the main hook in the rear except one small 7ft bull with the secondary hook
Man what a great pic....................amazing how they sometimes miss the hook. How long did you let it run before trying to set the hook?
you know thats the crazy thing man, i never knew my 12/0 went off bc i must have been day dreaming or at the time i had left to start packn up things for the night and that was the only rod left in the water at the time. when i reeled the bait in for the night. thats when i realized what had happened and was in such SHOCK bc i thought the bait never got touched at all!
