We Defend our Land-based shark fishing against Bans in Past -GET INVOLVED
Make it a point to get involved and defend the sport of land based shark fishing. In 2009 the city of Delray Beach Fl tried to pass a shark fishing Ban from there municipal beach and we saw this as a precedent that could stir other beachside communities to initiate similar laws that would affect land-based shark fishing in other parts of Florida. I predicted that our sport would come under attack at some point and have for some time been calling for the unification of the land-based shark fisherman to better defend our rights .That moment has arrived!! Most of these communities are misinformed about the true nature of sharks .Fear .misinformation and misguided locals are often behind these ordinances that the beachside communities enact our fundamental liberties are being eroded and our way of life is threatened by these people who from there million dollar mansions would rather not have anyone from outside there community coming to there beaches,,,,,,,,,that is the simple TRUTH!! 1)Shark fishing from a beach does not put at risk swimmers. 2) most shark attacks occur in murky water when a shark mistakes a surfer for a thrashing fish 3) a hooked shark has never attacked a swimmer 4)shark fishing takes place in the evening mostly when bathers are out of the water 5)We do not chum sharks to a beach (that would be absurd),we drop our baits 200 to 500 yards away from the beach. 6)We do not attract sharks to the beach ,they allready live and thrive there. 7)Dead fish often wash up on the beach ,,,,,,it is the ocean after all . Truth be told Tarpon fishing or fishing for any other type of fish attracts more sharks to the shoreline then land-based shark fishing. When a hooked fish is struggling on a fishing line it sends out distress signals that sharks home in on.A shark is attracted to our shark bait that sits well away from shore, those sharks naturally feed in those areas and also come in at night to mate.In all actuality sharks are drawn in toward the shoreline to chase the hooked fish a fisherman reels in.The simple TRUTH!!! We are unfairly being targeted and discriminated based on people's fear of sharks and the desire to keep regular folks out of the rich seaside towns. NO!!We will be become an easy target if we do nothing to defend our rights. creational fisherman's rights will continue to come under attack by more organizations hell bent on changing our way of life and our pursuit of happiness which involves catching fish. No fishing Zones are allready in place in parts of Florida, and RECREATIONAL FISHERMAN around the world are under attack by overzealous conservationist not educated to the real threats that affect world wide fish stocks . A)Pollution B)The loss of coral reefs C)Developing nations that ignore international treaties/laws that safe guard the oceans and it's sealife D)Commercial Overfishing E)Over development on the coast & the destruction of seaside natural habitats F)Deforesstation G)Global Warming ALL THESE THINGS ARE INTERCONNECTED AND AFFECT THE OCEANS 1)STOP THE BASHING AND UNITE 2)HAVE A MEETING TO OPEN UP DIALOGUE AMONG THE FISHERMAN TO FIND IDEAS THAT WILL DEFEND OUR RIGHTS -time to set aside our differences and work together- The meeting should take place as soon as possible BEFORE THE COMMISION MEETING on Tuesday July 21st at 6 pm,one day this week would be a good idea. 3)INVOLVE SURFRIDER ORGANIZATION TO TAKE UP OUR CAUSE 4)MOUNT A LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN TO THE DELRAY BEACH COMMISSIONERS 5)ATTEND THE MEETING AT THE DELRAY BEACH CITY HALL ON Tuesday JULY 21st 6 pm 6)RETAIN A LAW FIRM WITH ENVIROMENTAL ISSUES EXPIERIENCE TO REPRESENT OUR CAUSE We are talking to our t-shirt man and we are having protest shirts made to wear to the commision meeting. The design is up to us to come up with.Any and all ideas are being considered. Thank You,,,,,Will 7/13/09

landbased shark fishing goes on all ove the world and we know this alot of the florida beaches have all ready banned shark fishing from the public beaches but i figure that alot of these city leader just listen to what they want to here and not the truth i have looked in to shark attacks on delray beach oh wait they hasnt been one that i can find since we have been shark fishing there or before we fished there i say if we can get the right lawyer to take on the cases we might have a chance
taking away land based shark fishing from is against our rights so i wonder if we wrote the governer a letter if he would help us through or with our fight
i can see the places were there are lots of shark attacks on humans banning shark fishing but beach were they are rare or even never heard of
i would rather see a bunch of young guys out on the beach fishing then them out doing drugs and other things that gets them locked up i say fishing is better than pushing drugs on them alot of city leaders just dont get the point
i was at delray we shannon hooked that monster shark i would like to hook something like that also and if we dont stand up for the future of shark fishing its going to die out or is it a dying sport?

Will if you are going to the meeting at city hall, You may want to ask someone from the shark tagging organization to stand up and say a few words about how important it is to tag and release sharks from beaches for further "study"
Also arriving early and filling up the available seats is important so as to keep the condo commandos from being seated and filling up the room.

I will be there.. just tell me when and where.. and if anyone needs a ride.. then ill being willing to help out with that too

Correction. The commision meeting will take place next Tuesday July 21st at 6 pm.I will get the exact address and post it up today
.
Those interested in attending should be well dressed and groomed .We need to understand that this is a professional court-like envirement ,very composed and professional where laws that affect the citizens of Delray beach are discussed and voted on.I have personally attended zoning meetings in front of city commisioners for a building Variance on a property I was upgrading and am familiar with how things work so please understand that conducting ourselves accordingly is important and will affect how we are viewed. We need to have as many people as possible that are on our side attend,we need to get there on time ,and we need to be respectful but effective. The Delray beach city commisioners, and the city attorney will be present to rebuff our arguements in favor of protecting the citizens of Delray beach. The commisioners and all those in the city goverment are typically college grads with enough education to defend there points so we need to do our homework and come prepared .We need to dress appropriately ,and conduct ourselves in a calm, respectful, professional manner .We need to base our arguements on facts and not on emotion .I am in the process of contacting a lawyer friend of mine to represent us on this matter.Hopefully we can have professional counsel to represent us and defend our rights. Soon i will announce the name if he agrees to take up our cause and is available on that day. We have to be prepared to present our case based on the facts .
FACTS
Fact #1 there proposed ban is based on a false presumpsion that we are endangering the bathers
Fact #2 sharks are a natural part of any beach and have been there even before mankind
Fact #3 the scientific community has proven that sharks are not the bloodthirsty monsters they were once believed to be
Fact #4 where we drop our baits is far beyond the swimming area
Fact #5 any fisherman reeling in a hooked fish will attract more sharks then a fisherman that paddles out a bait away from the simming beach so why DISCRIMINATE against the shark fisherman
There will be different sectors of the land-based shark fishing community attending the meeting representing our cause and that is always a welcome development.Sean and Brook Paxton of the International Land Based Shark Fishing Association will be in attendance and we hope that a shark research scientist or two involved in the Apex Predator tagging program with expert knowledge of shark behaviour could reassure the city goverment that there fear of sharks is not justified. We may not all agree on the same things but we agree to defend our right to fish the beaches regardless of what we are fishing for.We can not have our freedom trampled and our rights needlessly attacked while we sit back and do nothing. I will be contacting marine biologist Dr Jose Castro of the Mote marine Laboratory in Sarasota to see if he can attend to shed some positive light and remove some of the unsubstanciated fear the beachgoers have of coastal sharks that naturally live and thrive in there local beaches.
We are open to any and all suggestions as to ways of defending our case.More soon.
THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN AND COOPERATION.

I would love to participate in this. Please let me know if there is anything i can do from Baltimore to help the cause.
Here are a few ideas off the tope of my head that the club can do.
1) Get in touch with a university fisheries biologist/shark expert from UM, FAU, USF, or one of the big universities and get their professional opinion. Use that opinion when you go to the community hearing. Make sure you have it in writing.
2) Write to local officials and perhaps even attempt to get them to accompany you guys on the beach and put them on a big shark. They would get a huge kick out of that. Kind of a long shot, but heck it might be worth it.
3) Gain local support. Just pick a night and specific point on the beach to go sharking, and hang up flyers at all the grocery stores, convenience stores, major intersections, on stop signs, and any other relevant locations. Advertise that you will supply free pizzas slices or something on the beach By advertising in this way, you would probably get quite a few people in the local community to come out and see what's going on. If you do get a shark, let the people touch it, get real close to it, see its teeth, and most importantly, when you release it, make sure to walk the shark out into knee deep water or more as to show the people that it wont bite you (little risky, just pay attention to what your doing). I was thinking about taking these steps in golden beach after all the residents started complaining that i was sharking there. I think that if i just had a Golden beach shark night, an invited community members, it will have a positive effect.
I will help in any way i can.
heres a neat video that was posted on boatless. it shows a shark just feeding inside the breakers.

A perfect example of how sharks thrive and often congregate in large numbers right off the beaches naturally. How can they blame the land-based shark fisherman for attracting what is allready there?

Smyrna´s inlet area closed for weekend
By MARK I. JOHNSON
STAFF WRITER
NEW SMYRNA BEACH — There will be no surfing or swimming near the south side of Ponce de Leon Inlet this weekend because of concerns about sharks patrolling the shoreline. The moratorium was extended and the span of beach it covers expanded Friday after county officials spotted large schools of the potentially dangerous predators between the Beachway Avenue beach approach and the south jetty.
Beach Patrol Capt. Rob Horster said early-morning helicopter surveys pinpointed two large concentrations of sharks, one of which had between 30 and 50 individuals. That sighting prompted the officers to expand the prohibited area from a half- mile to a full mile down the beach. It had previously stretched from the jetty to the Inlet Condominium.
The continuing moratorium on swimming and surfing comes in the wake of seven surfers being bit by sharks in that region since last Saturday. An eighth bite, reported in Wilbur-by-the-Sea on Sunday, is the only incident reported recently outside the zone south of the inlet.
The closed area is a popular surfing location, which could create conflicts as wave riders try to catch the swells. Horster said surfers traditionally ignore warnings of sharks in the water, but no action has been taken against them. That may not be the case this weekend, he said, because extra officers will be patrolling the moratorium zone. Officials have said violators could be subject to arrest if they ignore orders to leave the water.Horster said county ordinances give the Beach Patrol authority to close any portion of the beach or water if it feels there is a safety hazard. A violation of the regulation is considered a misdemeanor.
Volusia County officials contacted Friday stressed that the decision to keep the water there off- limits was made by the Beach Patrol and not county government.
County Risk Management Manger Frank Catapano and County Attorney Dan Eckert said they were not consulted nor should they have been.
"It was a decision from the field," said Eckert. "We don´t have any superior knowledge of sharks in the area. The people surfing there are probably more knowledgeable about sharks than we are."
Catapano added that even if there is a problem, the county cannot be held accountable for a shark attack.
"It is a natural thing," he said. "The county can´t control that."
The courts have agreed in the past.
In 1981, an Illinois man sued the county after he lost a leg to a shark bite, saying lifeguards failed to provide adequate protection from the creatures. However, the jury found the county was not negligent.
Horster´s counterpart, Capt. Dave Williams, said he does not anticipate any problems this weekend.
He said with all the media coverage, the public realizes the reasoning behind the closure and will respect it because it "increases the chance of everyone being safe and not getting bit."
"We have been trying to educate the people," Williams said. "And we are expecting them to cooperate with us."
Not everyone is as optimistic.
Beach concessionaire Jim Kirkendoll predicted a "lot of upset surfers" if Beach Patrol officers prevent them from entering the water.
"They are going to have a riot on their hands," he said.
Kirkendoll isn´t thrilled with the closure, either. He said since the swimming and surfing moratorium was put in place Thursday, his business has suffered.
"Yesterday all I made all day was $30," he said Friday. "That is just enough to break even."
The closure also was not good news for Flagler Avenue surf shops.
Aubrey Jarvis, assistant manager for Quiet Flight, said she anticipates a drop in business.
"Most of the people who come over from Orlando come to surf and swim," she said. "It will hurt."
But New Smyrna Beach hotel and condominium managers said they haven´t seen a drop in reservations because of the shark bites.
A group that could be out in force over the weekend, according to Williams, may be anglers.
In recent days, he said there have been a growing number of them along the shore, some of whom have been targeting sharks in violation of county ordinances. The county prohibits fishing for sharks within 600 feet of shore as well as baiting or chumming for them. He said officers have had to warn those individuals to pack up their rods or face citations.
While the inlet area is closed to water activities, Beach Patrol officers stressed that still leaves several miles of sand and water available for beach lovers.
However, they said, if sharks are spotted in those waters, they also will be closed at least for a short time to give the creatures time to leave.

This video i found right after the June/2009 beach gathering on Delray beach.I don't know these two fisherman and don't know if this contributed to the proposed ban but it possibly proves that we have to do our shark fishing without making it public in avenues like youtube,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,What do you think?

Two Organizations that know the importance of protecting our right to fish the beaches and to have beach access .Not the same as preserving our right to fish for sharks but very informative with much insight into what we are currently facing.
